1. RoverPathProfileWorker sandbox ownership: fallback_hits/2 used
Task.async_stream spawning separate DB-querying processes that
lacked Ecto sandbox ownership in test mode. Replaced with
sequential Enum.map since miss list is ≤9 points — no meaningful
perf impact and eliminates the sandbox race entirely.
2. PSKR client test: asserted '6m' band in defaults, but the actual
microwave band name is '6cm'. Fixed assertion.
Python pskr_mqtt_listen.py:
- Guard against malformed CONNACK/SUBACK/PUBLISH packets
- Fix _s() truthiness: is not None instead of if v (zero SNR was lost)
- EINTR-safe select loop, OOB data handling, VBInt overflow check
- Proper socket cleanup with try/finally + DISCONNECT on shutdown
Elixir:
- Log dropped spot errors in aggregator (was silently discarded)
- Wire retain_scores_window into NotifyListener chain completion
- Recurse sweep_tmp_dir into band/weather_scalars subdirectories
- Rescue recalibrator.run/0 to write failed status row on crash
- Handle nil in fmt_snr/fmt_callsigns (no more nil dB crashes)
- Replace Stream.run with Enum.reduce logging exits in poll_worker
- Handle File.stat race in ms_footprints prune, grid_center nil log

Rust:
- Graceful JoinError handling in fetcher/hrdps_fetcher (no more panics)

Close 6 cleanup gaps on the shared /data NFS mount:
- HRDPS .hrdps.prop score files: parse_valid_time regex now matches
the .hrdps.prop extension, so these files are found and pruned
- HRDPS scalar dirs (weather_scalars/{iso}.hrdps/): strip .hrdps suffix
before DateTime.from_iso8601 in list_valid_time_dirs
- ScalarFile: prune_older_than was defined but never called from
Propagation.prune_old_scores - now called alongside Scores/Profiles
- Orphan .tmp.* files: sweep all three base dirs (scores/profiles/scalars)
for .tmp.* files left by crashed atomic-write processes
- Building cache (/data/buildings/): add MsFootprints.prune_older_than
with 30-day mtime cutoff
- Canopy cache (/data/canopy/ + staging/): add Canopy.prune_older_than
with 30-day cutoff, cleanup empty staging dir
All cleanup is cutoff-based (older than X time) so if the prune worker
is missed for any period it catches up fully on the next run.
PropagationPruneWorker updated to call all new cleanup functions.
- CacheTest: fix sweep timing race by using negative TTL (-1)
instead of positive TTL (1) for already-expired entries
- ScoreCache: replace ETS match-spec DateTime comparisons with
:ets.foldl + DateTime.compare — DateTime structs are maps in
Elixir >= 1.15 and ETS can't compare maps with :< / :> guards
- Accounts: drop unsupported returning: true on delete_all,
return [] for expired tokens list
- Backtest: catch ArgumentError from String.to_existing_atom
for unknown feature names, preserving the helpful Mix.Error
- ContactLive IndexTest: invalidate monthly_bars cache before
assertion so test data is visible
- RoverLocationsLive MapTest: invalidate cached points before
assertion
- StatusLiveTest: add DB cleanup in setup to reduce test
interference; parameterize NARR candidate coordinates
HRRR publishes f21-f48 at 3-hourly intervals in addition to the
hourly f01-f18 we already fetch. This extends the grid_tasks seed
from 19 rows (1 analysis + 18 forecast) to 29 rows (1 analysis +
18 hourly + 10 3-hourly), and bumps the UI forecast window
constant from 18h to 48h so the map timeline and path calculator
forecast chart automatically show the extended horizon.
No Rust logic changes needed — the pipeline is data-driven and
u8 forecast_hour already handles f48.
- Update .tool-versions to elixir 1.20.0-otp-29 / erlang 29.0.1
- Update all hex dependencies
- Remove unused aliases in path_compute.ex and rover_planning_live/show.ex
- Fix Oban unique states to include :suspended (use :incomplete group)
Two regressions from the recent performance commits:
1. ScoresController.encode_binary/1 (9cce257d): Enum.reduce produces
iolists, but <<lats::binary>> requires actual binaries. Caused HTTP
500 on every /scores/cells request when score files exist on disk,
making the entire propagation heatmap overlay invisible.
2. ScoreCache.valid_times/1 (15f4175c): Pipe syntax feeds @table as
the first argument to :ets.foldl/3, creating a 4-argument call
that crashes at runtime.
- Radio.group_reciprocals: replace O(n²) nested Enum.filter with O(n)
Enum.group_by using a hash key (sorted station pair + band + hour)
- contact_live/index.ex: cache monthly bars Repo.all(Contact) query
with 60s TTL
- ScoreCache.valid_times: replace :ets.select with :ets.foldl to
avoid intermediate list allocation
- Accounts.list_users: add limit(100) to unbounded query
- Accounts.backfill_missing_home_qth: batch individual Oban.insert
calls into single Oban.insert_all
- grid.ex: memoize conus_points/0 with module attribute (was ~94k recompute per call)

Replace the two-script Python pipeline (analysis report + Elixir-source
emitter) with a single `scripts/recalibrate.py` that fits per-band
weights from PSKR spot density (VHF/UHF) and contacts↔HRRR correlations
(microwave), writing `priv/algo/band_weights.json` as a machine-readable
artifact. A new Elixir BandWeights module loads this JSON once via
`:persistent_term` cache; BandConfig.weights/1 consults it before falling
back to in-source overrides or global defaults. The script never touches
Elixir source — recalibration is now `python3 scripts/recalibrate.py`
followed by an app restart.
PathCompute.compute/5 now accepts an :on_progress callback and emits
9 named stages (resolve → terrain → HRRR grid → atmospheric → sounding
→ scoring → budget → forecast → ionosphere). PathLive runs the compute
in start_async, streams {:compute_progress, step, total, label}
messages from the callback, and renders the current stage + step/total
in the disabled button alongside a daisyUI progress bar — replacing
the static "Computing..." while the multi-second pipeline runs.
handle_async covers :ok, :error, and {:exit, _} (last logs per the
CLAUDE.md async-error rule). Existing PathLive tests that asserted on
result content after live() were switched to render_async(lv) so they
wait for the task; new tests cover the progress callback ordering and
the in-flight label rendering.
- Radio.normalize_proposed/1 now Map.take/2 the allowed-edit keys
before normalization. Owner / admin / pending-edit submit paths all
funnel through this boundary, so a crafted form can no longer
mass-assign user_id, flagged_invalid, inserted_at, etc. on a
contact via String.to_existing_atom -> Ecto.Changeset.change.
- Accounts.revoke_api_token/2 rescues Ecto.Query.CastError and
returns {:error, :not_found} so a malformed UUID in
DELETE /api/v1/me/api-tokens/:id renders the API's clean 404
problem+json instead of a 500.
- ProfilesFile.read_etf decodes with :erlang.binary_to_term(bin, [:safe]).
Defense-in-depth against tampered on-disk profiles (atom-table
exhaustion via untrusted ETF).
- Regression tests: contact_edit_test.exs covers the rejected
mass-assignment fields; accounts_api_token_test.exs covers the
malformed-UUID path.
- Beacon detail endpoints (LiveView + REST API) now hide unapproved
beacons from anonymous and unauthorized viewers; only the submitter
and admins can see pending records before approval. Adds
Beacons.get_visible_beacon/2 with scope-aware checks.
- API contact pagination now honors per_page end-to-end.
Radio.list_contacts/1 accepts :per_page and clamps to 200.
- API rate limiter: ETS table is now owned by a long-lived Sweeper
GenServer (won't die with a request task); Sweeper periodically
prunes expired-window rows to bound memory; init_table/0 race is
rescued.
- /scores/cells and /weather/cells: add per-IP rate limiting and a
shared GridBounds clamp/413 guard so global / oversized viewports
no longer drive unbounded binary responses.
- NEXRAD PNG unfilter (sub/up/average/paeth): replace acc++[byte]
+ Enum.at(acc, idx-bpp) with O(n) binary recursion. Decode time
for the 12200x5400 n0q frame goes from quadratic to linear.
- LiveTableFooter.parse_page and ScoresFile.fetch_bound: switch
String.to_integer/String.to_float to Integer.parse/Float.parse,
fall back to defaults instead of raising.
- PathLive and MapLive band-event handlers: replace
String.to_integer(params["band"]) with parse_int / parse_band_param
so a non-numeric band parameter no longer crashes the LiveView.
- PathCompute: compute_loss_budget/5 and compute_power_budget/2 made
public with @doc false; property tests covering fspl, o2, h2o, rain,
diffraction across all 13 known bands + varying distances
- Viewshed: property tests for destination_point back-bearing round-trip
and east-west bearing at equator (2 new properties)
Coverage: 79.07% → 79.06% (PathCompute 60→63%)
Replaces the "tropo composite + post-hoc aurora boost" model with a
max-over-mechanisms dispatcher so each band's score reflects the
dominant propagation channel rather than summing alternative paths.
- BandConfig.mechanisms/1 derives the stack from frequency:
≤432 MHz gets [:tropo, :aurora]; >432 MHz stays [:tropo]. Bands
may override with an explicit :mechanisms field.
- Scorer.mechanism_score/3 returns a standalone integer score for
one mechanism (:tropo delegates to composite_score; :aurora is a
clean Kp/freq function, not a boost on top of tropo).
- Scorer.cell_score/2 takes max across the band's mechanisms so a
Kp-6 storm scores 6m at 85 even when the tropo picture is poor,
instead of conflating the two channels.
Es and F2 stay in PathCompute since they're path-distance-dependent.
The legacy aurora_boost path is unchanged so no callers shift today.
`Scorer.aurora_boost(score, kp, band_config)` is a terminal boost
applied after `composite_score` in the same shape as the existing
`commercial_link_boost`. It tracks the NOAA G-scale (Kp 5+ opens
auroral E-region paths up to ~2500 km) and is freq-gated to
≤ 432 MHz — auroral propagation is observed almost exclusively on
50/144/222, occasionally on 432, and never at microwave.
Boost magnitudes:
* Kp < 4 (quiet) — pass-through
* Kp 4 — +5
* Kp 5 (G1) — +15
* Kp 6 (G2) — +25
* Kp ≥ 7 (G3+) — +35, clamped to 100
Wired into `Propagation.score_grid_point/4` via the existing
`hrrr_profile` map: callers populate `:kp_index` once per cycle so
the per-grid-point band loop never queries the DB. The UI fallback
path (`factors_from_profile/5`) sources Kp from
`SpaceWeather.latest_kp/0` directly. Other call sites
(GEFS forecast, path-compute, contact-show) can opt in by adding
`:kp_index` to their profile map.
Diagnostic factor `:kp_index` is stashed on VHF/low-UHF results so
the operator-facing factor breakdown can show why a band scored
above its quiet-conditions baseline. Microwave bands don't carry
the diagnostic — they're never affected by the boost.
Refactored `score_with_algorithm/7` to delegate band-level
finalization to `finalize_band_result/5`, keeping the parent
function under credo's cyclomatic-complexity limit.
NOTE: this only affects the Elixir scoring path — the live grid
served by `prop_grid_rs` (Rust) does its own scoring and does not
yet honor Kp. Adding aurora to the Rust side is follow-up work.
Three connected changes:
1) Extract PathLive.compute_path/4 + every helper it owned (resolve,
profile grid lookup, sounding/ionosphere readouts, scoring, loss /
power budgets) into Microwaveprop.Propagation.PathCompute. PathLive
now delegates; ~410 lines of dead helpers deleted from PathLive.
2) RoverPathProfileWorker calls PathCompute.compute/4 with the
mission's heights and PathLive's default station params (10 W TX,
30 dBi gains). Stores the full atom-keyed compute output as a
Base64-encoded :erlang.term_to_binary/1 blob alongside the flat
summary fields the rover-planning show table reads. The blob
roundtrips structs and DateTime exactly (Jason.encode would lose
them).
3) PathLive accepts ?rover_path_id=UUID. When set, loads the cached
Path, decodes the term (binary_to_term :safe), assigns it as
@result, and renders normally — no compute_path call. The
rover-planning show table now links rows directly to
/path?rover_path_id=UUID, so a click opens the full Path
Calculator UI from cached data without re-running terrain / HRRR /
sounding lookups.
Bonus prod fixes folded in:
- PathShow's elevation chart attribute (data-* → data-profile JSON)
was crashing the JS hook with 'unexpected character at line 1'.
- Station.changeset now wipes previously-resolved callsign/grid/
lat/lon when the user types into :input — typing 'AA5' early
resolved to a wrong location and locked it; subsequent keystrokes
never re-resolved.
- phx-debounce=600 on the station input so QRZ doesn't get hit on
every keystroke.
Recalibrator and FrontalAnalysis use Nx for tensor math, but Nx is
declared `only: [:dev, :test]` in mix.exs because neither module has a
prod entry point — Recalibrator is invoked by hand from IEx and
FrontalAnalysis is research scaffolding. The prod compile would emit
"Nx.to_number/1 is undefined" warnings on every Nx call. Add a
`@compile {:no_warn_undefined, Nx}` directive to both modules so the
prod build is clean without dragging Nx/Axon/EXLA (~hundreds of MB) into
the runtime image.
The HRDPS pipeline as written was unusable in production: each chain
step took ~5 hours (not 30-90s as the dev-bench claim) because every
`wgrib2 -lon` batch redundantly JPEG2000-decodes ~150 records. With 57
batches × 18 forecast hours, a single cycle would take days to drain.
The /weather Canadian view only needs the current hour, so the cheapest
fix is to stop seeding the rest of the chain entirely:
* Rust grid: HRDPS_STEP=0.5 (was 0.125) drops point count 16× to ~3.5k.
Coarser cells than HRRR, but /weather gets visible Canadian coverage
inside one chain step (~20 min) instead of never.
* GridTaskEnqueuer.seed_current_hour/2 inserts exactly one forecast row
whose valid_time is closest to `now`. fh is clamped to 1..18 so the
Rust F00Reserved branch never fires.
* HrdpsGridWorker switches to seed_current_hour and drops the
6-hour-cycle cron in favor of HH:35 hourly fires. Reseeds are
idempotent on the 4-column unique key.
Also fixes a pre-existing credo "nested too deep" in
ScalarFile.read_point by extracting lookup_in_chunk + hit_or_false
helpers — happened to be on the read path that surfaces this work, so
folding it into the same commit.
Stages 6, 7, 10 of the HRDPS plan, plus the Elixir read-side merge
that makes Rust's `.hrdps.prop` writes show up on /map.
Read side:
- `ScoresFile.path_for_hrdps/2` + `read_hrdps/2` — companions to the
HRRR equivalents. Same decode path; different filename.
- `ScoresFile.read_bounds/3` now reads HRRR + HRDPS files and
concatenates the cells. Files are disjoint by construction
(Grid.hrdps_only_points excludes CONUS) so no de-dup needed.
- `ScoresFile.read_point/4` checks `.prop`, then `.hrdps.prop`, then
legacy `.ntms` — first hit wins. Cells outside their owning region
read as no-data in the other file's grid, so the order doesn't
matter for correctness.
- `Propagation.warm_cache_and_broadcast/2` reads both files and
merges before broadcasting to the cluster ScoreCache. A single
missing file (HRDPS pre-cycle, HRRR briefly absent) is now OK —
the cache warms with whichever side is available.
Activation:
- runtime.exs cron: HRDPS seed worker fires at HH:35 of each cycle
hour (05:35Z, 11:35Z, 17:35Z, 23:35Z) — 5h after cycle, 30 min
staggered from HRRR's */15 schedule.
- HrdpsGridWorker moduledoc updated: no longer dormant; Rust
prop-grid-rs handles source='hrdps' rows.
- map_live North America bbox extended to (24.5, 60.0, -141.0, -52.0)
for the out-of-coverage banner check; visitors anywhere in CONUS
or the Canadian extent now stay banner-free.
Cleanup:
- mix hrdps.probe deleted — its risks are retired and the production
HrdpsClient covers the same surface.
What's still in motion (not blocking the Canadian /map):
- Per-valid_time profile + scalar artifacts for HRDPS (would let
/weather show Canadian temperature/refractivity layers). Rust
pipeline currently skips those so the HRRR-written companion files
aren't clobbered — separate stage when /weather UX is decided.
- FreshnessMonitor HRDPS staleness tracking — HRDPS has its own cron
and a different cadence than HRRR; HRRR-stale logic doesn't apply
cleanly. Defer until prod tells us what alarms we actually want.
Stage 3 (Elixir foundation) of the HRDPS plan. Lands the scaffolding
that lets the Rust prop-grid-rs HRDPS branch be wired up cleanly when
it ships, without further DB or Elixir-side changes.
What ships:
- `grid_tasks.source` column (default 'hrrr', backfill is a no-op).
Replaces the (run_time, forecast_hour, kind) unique index with a
4-column key (..., source) so HRRR and HRDPS analysis/forecast rows
for the same cycle coexist.
- `Grid.hrdps_only_points/0` — Canadian cells inside HRDPS bbox
(49-60°N, -141 to -52°W) but outside HRRR's CONUS bbox. Disjoint
from `conus_points/0` by construction so the two grids never
double-write the same (lat, lon).
- `Grid.point_source/1` — `:hrrr | :hrdps | :neither` classification
for a (lat, lon) pair. Routes per-QSO enrichment to the right NWP
source.
- `GridTaskEnqueuer.seed_with_analysis/2` and `seed/2` accept a
`:source` option; defaults to "hrrr" so existing callers are
unchanged.
- `HrdpsGridWorker` cycle seeder mirroring PropagationGridWorker's
shape but for HRDPS's 4×/day cadence. `:hrdps` queue added to base
Oban config.
What's deferred:
- The Rust `prop-grid-rs` worker doesn't yet branch on
`task.source`. Until that ships, `HrdpsGridWorker` stays out of
runtime.exs cron — it would just produce rows that the Rust worker
mishandles as HRRR. Module doc explicitly notes the dormant state.
- Map overlay extension and FreshnessMonitor HRDPS staleness deferred
to follow-up sessions once real data flows.
Activation path documented in the updated plan file.
Coverage cap recorded as Stage 8 decision: 60°N for v1 (SRTM stops
there). Arctic CDEM deferred to a follow-up plan.
Bucket each cache entry into 5°×5° spatial chunks matching the layout
used by Weather.GridCache. fetch_bounds/3 now walks only the chunks
intersecting the viewport instead of the full 92k-cell CONUS map; a
typical zoomed viewport hits ~1500 cells per chunk × the chunks the
viewport overlaps instead of scanning all 92k.
Public API and observable behavior unchanged. Add cross-chunk-boundary
regression tests so future refactors can't silently flatten the layout.
Move the /weather render path off raw HRRR profile decoding + per-cell
SoundingParams + WeatherLayers derivation. The dominant cost was
re-deriving the same scalar fields on every viewport pan and timeline
scrub.
Server side:
- New Microwaveprop.Weather.ScalarFile persists pre-derived scalar
rows on NFS, bucketed into 5°×5° chunk files under
<base>/weather_scalars/<iso>/<lat_band>_<lon_band>.etf.gz. Viewport
reads only decode the chunks that overlap the requested bounds;
point-detail clicks read exactly one chunk.
- weather_grid_at/2 and weather_point_detail/3 prefer ScalarFile;
ProfilesFile is now the cold-start fallback only.
- warm_grid_cache_and_broadcast/1 and warm_grid_cache_from_latest_profile/0
also persist the scalar artifact, and the cold-derive path kicks
off a per-valid_time-locked async materialization so the next
reader gets the cheap path.
- NotifyListener.handle_propagation_ready/1 fires
Weather.materialize_scalar_file/1 in a detached Task on the Rust
pipeline's NOTIFY propagation_ready, so steady-state forecast hours
arrive with their scalar artifact already on disk.
- available_weather_valid_times/0 unions ScalarFile + ProfilesFile so
the timeline survives an aggressive retention sweep on either side.
Browser side (finding #8):
- Mount the legend Leaflet control once and patch its inner content
on layer changes instead of remove + re-add on every renderLayer.
- renderTimeline now keys off the rendered button set: selection-only
updates take an applyTimelineSelection patch path that restyles
existing buttons in place. Full innerHTML rebuild only fires when
timelineData itself changes.
Also fixes a credo nesting-depth flag in tile_renderer.ex by extracting
interpolate_pair/2 from the inner anonymous function.
Refit on the current contact corpus via mix recalibrate_scorer (val loss
0.140 vs 0.146 train, initial 0.434). Mostly small adjustments — the
notable shifts are time_of_day −0.0116 (now the smallest factor) and
rain +0.0069 (continues to be the largest single weight).
Sums to 1.0 (within rounding); per-band overrides not affected.
- Unify haversine_km / deg_to_rad: Geo is the canonical home (atan2
form for antipodal stability); Radio, common_volume, rain_scatter,
ionosphere, terrain/srtm, terrain/elevation_client now delegate.
- Drop safe_min/safe_max wrappers in favor of Enum.min/max defaults.
- Move parse_float / parse_int to MicrowavepropWeb.LiveHelpers; eme,
path, and rover LiveViews import from there.
- Extract MicrowavepropWeb.LocationResolver from the eme/path
resolve_source / resolve_location duplicate. Standardize the kind
key and "Invalid grid square" error message.
- Convert Scorer cond chains (humidity, td_depression, sky, wind,
rain, pwat, pressure) to multi-clause guarded defs, matching the
existing classify_time_period style.
- extract_profile_fields uses a named map accumulator instead of a
6-tuple; build_path_conditions guards on %{temps: []} / %{dewpoints: []}.
- Collapse scores_file clamp/3 to max |> min.
- humidity_effect_label lives in BandConfig; map_live and path_live
both use it.
The /path calculator showed "0 / 9 HRRR points" in production despite
the on-disk profile store being current. Root cause: profile_from_cell/2
treated the cell's :profile key as a wrapper sub-map and called
Map.put_new on it — but the :profile key actually holds the vertical
pressure-level LIST. Every point sample crashed with BadMapError, the
crash propagated as {:exit, _} through Task.async_stream, and the
consumer silently dropped all 9 results.
Fix: stop wrapping. Cells are already flat HrrrProfile-shaped maps;
just stamp lat/lon (from the caller, since cells don't carry their
own coords — those are the map key) and valid_time onto the cell.
Audit + log every other async error path so the next silent failure
isn't invisible:
- PathLive HRRR point lookup
- Propagation.point_forecast per-hour reads
- Viewshed ray crashes
- IemClient ASOS network fetches
- RtmaClient range-download tasks
- Recalibrator factor-vector batches (positive + negative samples)
- MapLive forecast preload tasks
- RoverLive station resolution
LiveViews already had handle_async/3 exit clauses with logging. The
gap was always in Task.async_stream consumers that wrote {:exit, _} -> []
without surfacing the reason.
Add the rule to CLAUDE.md and project memory so this never repeats.
Also fix a pre-existing skewt_svg.ex compiler warning where
@critical_label_min_dy was used before being defined.
Both retired in light of the 2026-04-25 revision report
(`docs/algo-reports/2026-04-25-algo-revisions.md`):
* HPBL boundary-layer multiplier in `Scorer.score_refractivity/{3,4,5}`
is gone. On the n=47,418 10 GHz HRRR-matched corpus rho_hpbl is
+0.004; binned distance is flat to within ±5 % across 200–2,000 m.
The previously reported 2.3× ratio between shallow and deep HPBL
bins was a small-corpus artefact that disappeared once the matched
corpus passed ~5,000 contacts.
* Native-profile 1.15× duct boost is gone. At 10 GHz on n=52,341
matched contacts, cells where `best_duct_band_ghz` ≥ band ran
*shorter* than no-duct cells (198 km vs 211 km, n=173 vs 44,658).
The Bulk Richardson gate that existed only to suppress that boost
in turbulent conditions is also retired; arity preserved on every
`score_refractivity` overload so callers compile unchanged.
Same retirements applied in the Rust port (`rust/prop_grid_rs/src/scorer.rs`)
to keep the Elixir/Rust parity tests green.
algo.md updated end-to-end:
* Finding 4 (HPBL) rewritten to "no usable signal" with the
n=47,418 bin table.
* Finding 5 (gradient) tightened: load-bearing only at 24 GHz,
set band-specific gradient weight to 0 outside [10, 47] GHz on
the next derive_band_weights run.
* Finding 8 (time-of-day) augmented with the robust hour-bucketed
amplitude index (40 / 82 / 101 % at 10 / 24 / 47 GHz) and a
selection-bias caveat for VHF/UHF (where 129–148 % amplitude
reflects evening contest scheduling, not propagation).
* Finding 9 (sounding) refreshed against the n=27,058 corpus.
* Part 2c "Native-profile duct boost" rewritten as
"retired 2026-04-25" with the falsifying join.
* Part 2c "Commercial-link inverse sensor" promoted from deferred
with the 22-day, 38k-sample SNMP corpus, the +0.61 / −0.61 PWAT
and pressure correlations against the 37-hour HRRR overlap, and
the 04–05 / 10–12 local two-peak morning fade window.
* Part 2b "Pressure" annotated with the U-shape at 10 GHz and the
next-iteration target.
* Part 2d "What stayed, what left" + "Open items" updated to
reflect the four code/doc moves.
119 Elixir scorer tests green, 134 Rust scorer tests green, 2,888
total Elixir tests + 221 properties green via `mix precommit`.
Each fix is covered by a regression test that fails on `main` and
passes on this commit.
Round 1 (initial review):
* propagation: thread `latitude` into the conditions map so
`score_season/4` actually picks up regional multipliers
* hrrr_client / fetcher.rs: `nearest_hrrr_hour` rounds DOWN, never at
a future cycle that NOAA hasn't published yet
* radio: spherical-vector great-circle midpoint replaces the
arithmetic mean — anti-meridian paths no longer fold to Greenwich
* weather: `reconcile_weather_statuses` scales the longitude band by
`1 / cos(lat)` so the bbox stays ~150 km wide at every latitude
* radio/maidenhead: clamp 90°/180° below the field-bucket overflow so
`from_latlon` never emits invalid characters like 'S'
* prop_grid_rs/pipeline: merge HRRR + NEXRAD-derived rain rates and
read `best_duct_freq_ghz` into `best_duct_band_ghz` so the Native
Duct Boost actually fires
* propagation/region (Elixir + Rust): inclusive upper bounds so points
exactly at lat_max get the regional multiplier
* weather/sounding_params (Elixir + Rust): drop the 10 m gradient
floor so HRRR's thin near-surface layers stop hiding sharp ducts
* weather/sounding_params: when the profile ends inside a duct,
finalize it with the highest sample as the top instead of throwing
it away (Rust port already correct)
Round 2 (post-fix sweep):
* radio + commercial: single canonical haversine in Radio (atan2
form); Commercial delegates instead of carrying a second copy that
could disagree at threshold distances
* prop_grid_rs/profiles_file: `snap_coords` matches Elixir's
step-aware snap (`round(coord/0.125) * 0.125`, then 3-dp round) so
Rust-keyed and Elixir-keyed profile maps land on the same cell
* weather/grib2/wgrib2: `parse_lon_val_segment` uses `Float.parse`
uniformly — wgrib2 dropping the trailing `.0` from a longitude no
longer crashes the whole chain step
ScoreCache held 437 entries × ~1.94 MiB each (~850 MiB per pod) of
{band_mhz, valid_time} grids — data already on NFS as compact .prop
files. NotifyListener and ScoreCacheReconciler both eagerly materialised
every band into ETS on each Rust completion / 60s sweep, so 5 hot
replicas wasted ~4.2 GiB of redundant cache and OOMed at 6 GiB.
Bound the cache to 32 entries with eviction by oldest valid_time, drop
the eager warm loops, and let LiveView callers lazy-fill via the
existing ScoresFile read path. ScoreCacheReconciler had no remaining
purpose and is deleted; runbook + prom_ex counters updated to match.
Steady-state cache footprint ~60 MiB per pod instead of ~850 MiB.
Found by auditing the ProfilesFile, hrrr_profiles, and weather-layer
contracts against what the Rust writers actually emit.
Bug 1 (HIGH) — Rust `hrrr_points` worker upserted hrrr_profiles rows
with NULL `surface_refractivity`, `min_refractivity_gradient`, and
`ducting_detected`. The Elixir HrrrClient path always wrote them
via SoundingParams.derive. Per-QSO pages that rely on these
scalars ("N:", "dN/dh:", duct badge) showed "—" for any contact
enriched through Stream C. Fixed by porting
`surface_refractivity` + `ducting_detected` into Rust's
`sounding_params.rs` and deriving at upsert time.
Bug 2 (HIGH) — Rust f01..f18 `cell_to_profile_entry` never emitted
wind_u / wind_v / cloud_cover_pct / precip_mm into ProfilesFile
cells. `Propagation.factors_for` recomputes factor scores from the
profile cell on /map click, and these four fields are read
(wind_speed_kts, sky_cover_pct, precip_to_rate_mmhr). Result: every
f01..f18 point-detail popup showed 0 for wind/sky/rain factors.
Fixed by extracting the grib values at cell_to_profile_entry time
and whitelisting the keys for atomization in
profiles_file.ex `@mp_atom_keys`.
Bug 4 (MEDIUM) — `WeatherLayers.duct_field/2` only knew the
`SoundingParams.detect_ducts` shape (`d["base"]` / `d["strength"]`).
The Rust/HrrrNativeClient shape uses `:base_m` / `:thickness_m`
atom keys (post-ProfilesFile.read atomization). On /weather, the
Duct Base / Duct Strength layers returned nil for every Rust-origin
cell. Tolerant lookup now reads either shape; uses `thickness_m`
as the "strength" proxy for the native shape (thicker duct traps
a wider band).
Skipped (verified but lower impact):
- Rust ProfilesFile aggregates ducts as scalars, not per-layer — the
`ducts` array in the popup is always empty. Requires larger
DuctMetrics refactor in Rust; deferred.
- `complete_hrrr_task` emits no NOTIFY (vs `complete` which does).
Elixir has no matching listener yet, so adding NOTIFY alone is a
no-op; the existing cron reconciler catches it.
- `:best_duct_band_ghz` fallback in propagation.ex is dead code;
cleanup, not a bug.
133 Rust tests + 2842 Elixir tests + credo green.
New /eme page — antenna aiming + link budget for moonbounce.
Given a station (callsign / grid / lat,lon), TX power, antenna gain,
detection bandwidth, and system Tsys, the page shows in real time:
- Moon azimuth / elevation from the observer (ticks every 10 s)
- Slant range to the Moon
- EIRP breakdown: TX(dBm) + gain(dBi) = EIRP(dBm)
- Path-loss decomposition (Earth → Moon → Earth):
free-space spreading (×2)
− moon reflection gain 10·log(4π σ / λ²) where σ = ρ·π·R²
= round-trip path loss
- Band-dependent lunar albedo ρ (VHF ≈ 0.065, microwave ≈ 0.08,
mm-wave ≈ 0.02) surfaced as a named line item with the current
ρ shown to three decimals
- Received power, thermal noise floor, and SNR with a badge that
classifies the margin (strong / marginal / below noise)
- Self-echo Doppler shift with its radial-velocity driver
New modules:
- `Microwaveprop.Moon` — low-precision lunar ephemeris
(Astronomical Almanac Sec. D.4 truncated series). Provides
`julian_day/1`, `geocentric/1`, `observer_position/3`, and
`radial_velocity_km_s/3`. Accurate to ~0.3° position / ~200 km
distance — well inside any amateur EME-dish beamwidth.
- `Microwaveprop.Propagation.Eme` — path-loss helpers:
`moon_albedo/1` (band lookup), `moon_rcs_m2/1`,
`fspl_round_trip_db/2`, `moon_reflection_gain_db/2`,
`path_loss_db/3`, `received_power_dbm/1`, `noise_floor_dbm/2`,
`snr_db/1`, `doppler_shift_hz/2`.
Wired into the main nav ("EME" button) and the router between
/path and /rover.
Tests: 3 properties + 41 unit tests cover JD conversion, moon
position envelope, band-dependent albedo lookup, decomposition
identity, linearity/monotonicity of path loss and Doppler, and a
LiveView integration test against the rendered DOM.
Full suite: 2,460 tests + 170 properties; credo strict clean.
Root cause of 14 stuck hrrr-queued contacts: hrrr_point_rs's CONUS-only
grid silently writes zero profiles for out-of-bounds points (UK,
Winnipeg, Alberta, >50° lat), but the fetch task still completes
successfully. ContactWeatherEnqueueWorker's hrrr_placeholder_jobs
always emitted a queued placeholder for any contact with a pos1,
which meant mark_hrrr_status! re-flagged :queued every backfill tick
forever.
Introduce Propagation.Grid.contains?/1 as the canonical in-CONUS
check (inclusive on all four edges, nil-safe). Use it in two places
of ContactWeatherEnqueueWorker:
- hrrr_placeholder_jobs/1 now returns [] for OCONUS contacts, same
as pre-2014 / already-complete ones.
- mark_hrrr_status!/3 empty-list clause now branches on Grid.contains?
first (→ :unavailable) before falling through to the existing
NARR-coverage / :complete logic.
Next backfill tick will flip the 14 stuck OCONUS contacts in prod to
:unavailable automatically. The remaining 13 "CONUS" stuck ones are
right at the 50° edge (lat=50.1875 rounds outside the box) — same
reconciliation path.
Coverage additions:
- Grid.contains?/1 — corner-inclusive, OCONUS positive/negative
fixtures based on the actual stuck-contact pos1 values, nil/missing-
key/nil-value handling.
- enqueue_for_contact regression tests: pos1 in the UK and pos1 just
north of the lat cap both land at :unavailable, not :queued.
Suite: 2,416 tests + 159 properties (was 2,409 + 159); credo strict
clean.
Changes under lib/ (source):
- iemre_fetch_worker: replace `if transient_failure?/1` boolean predicate
+ `if/else` with a classifier that pattern-matches the error reason
directly, returning `:transient | :permanent`, and dispatch via
`case`. Three-clause head is clearer than the boolean predicate.
- scores_file.extract_points and nexrad_client.extract_box: force `//1`
step on the row/col comprehensions so an image box whose centre
lands outside the raster collapses to an empty iteration instead
of firing Elixir 1.19's ambiguous-range warning. Adds a regression
test for the right-edge box.
Test coverage added:
- Feature wrappers in Backtest.Features (theta_e_jump, shear_at_top,
duct_thickness, best_duct_freq, duct_usable_for_band,
distance_to_front / parallel_to_front stubs, all_features/0).
- NotifyListener handle_info tolerance for malformed payloads +
unknown messages, plus the PubSub broadcast side effect.
- Viewshed.effective_reach_km across every verdict / diffraction
tier / ducting-score tier combination.
- SnmpClient parse_af60_output unit conversions + unknown-column
handling; parse_snmpget_output OID normalisation and junk-line
tolerance.
- HrrrNativeClient native_level_count, native_variables,
native_messages shape, duct_messages / duct_byte_ranges.
- Changeset coverage for GeomagneticObservation, SolarFluxObservation,
SolarXrayObservation, Ionosphere.Observation, HrrrClimatology, and
Metar5minObservation — lifted each from ~50% / 0% to 100%.
- Property tests: GefsClient.dewpoint_from_rh invariants (Td ≤ T,
monotonic in RH, finite across the operating envelope) + idempotent
nearest_run. NexradClient.pixel_to_dbz monotonicity + bounded
output; latlon_to_pixel round-trip for every grid cell.
Also cleared several unrelated compiler/linter warnings:
- Three private test helpers (create_contact, insert_contact,
current_hour) had `\\ %{}` / `\\ 0` defaults that no caller used.
- profiles_file_test bound `dir` in a pattern match without using it.
Suite: 2,359 tests + 146 properties pass (was 2,300 / 139); coverage
70.38% → 70.89%; credo strict clean.
Rust workers (prop-grid-rs) that die mid-claim (SIGKILL, OOM, node
drain) leave grid_tasks rows stuck in status='running' forever,
because claim_next uses FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED and nothing resets the
orphan. The /status page then shows a permanent spinner with stale
f00/f10/f18 badges — currently 21 rows claimed as far back as
2026-04-20.
GridTaskEnqueuer.reclaim_stale_running/1 flips rows whose claimed_at
is older than 15 minutes back to 'queued'. Rows that have already
burned through 5 claim/reclaim cycles become 'failed' with a
reclaim-orphan error so the next hourly seed can replace them.
Wired into PropagationGridWorker.seed_chain/0 so it runs every :05
cron tick before new rows are seeded.
Also rename the status panel "Retrying" column to "Failed" — it was
always showing terminal `failed` rows, never retrying ones.
Hot pods were restart-looping every ~25 minutes on liveness probe
timeouts. Root cause: ScoreCacheReconciler mirrored every .prop file
from NFS into ETS, including 7 days of GEFS Day 2-7 forecasts. With
23 bands × 43 valid_times × ~2 MB per grid = 1.95 GB in the
propagation_score_cache table alone; GC sweeps starved the
scheduler enough that /live dropped its 3 s budget.
The /map UI only ever requests the [now-1h, now+18h] window. Share
that bound as Propagation.hot_cache_window/0 and apply it in the
reconciler's disk-scan path plus NotifyListener's post-warm prune.
Long-horizon GEFS files stay on disk and are still served via the
lazy read_from_disk_and_cache path when requested directly.
Adds ScoreCache.prune_outside_window/2 (inclusive bounds) and
updates the reconciler tests to use relative-to-now timestamps
since hardcoded fixture dates now drift out of window.
The main /map timeline was rendering each forecast hour twice
('Now 22:00' + '0h 22:00', '+1h 23:00' + '+1h 23:00', …).
Root cause: during the rolling `.ntms` → `.prop` rename window,
both extensions live on NFS for the same valid_time. `list_score_files`
matches either, so `list_valid_times_raw` mapped 2 files → 2 DateTimes
with no dedupe. Propagation.available_valid_times inherited the dup,
push_timeline pushed it to the JS hook, renderTimeline drew one chip
per entry — hence the visible duplicate.
Fix: `Enum.uniq` before the sort. Regression test writes a `.prop`
file, copies it as the same valid_time's `.ntms` legacy twin, and
asserts list_valid_times returns a single DateTime.
Also land a small refactor that was queued behind this: move the three
pure mechanism display helpers (label/1, badge_class/1, explainer/1)
out of the 2500-line contact_live/show.ex into a new
MicrowavepropWeb.ContactLive.Mechanism module. No behavior change — just
shrinks the LiveView and gives the display mapping a testable home.
