Applies the 11 recommendations from the codebase optimization review.
Module decomposition:
- Extract Towerops.Topology.InferenceEngine: pulls device-role inference
(capability rules, vendor matching, evidence merging) out of the topology
context. Topology now delegates merge_confidence/2,
infer_role_from_capabilities/1, and infer_device_role/1.
- Extract Towerops.Accounts.TOTP: TOTP secret/QR generation, multi-device
verification, recovery code lifecycle, and sudo MFA logic. Accounts
delegates the public TOTP API for backwards compatibility.
- Extract Towerops.Accounts.Sessions: browser session create/list/touch/
revoke/anonymize/expire. Accounts delegates the public session API.
- Extract Towerops.Snmp.Queries: time-series read paths
(sensor readings, interface stats, latest-per-id batches).
- Extract Towerops.Snmp.Monitoring: time-series write paths
(sensor/interface/processor reading inserts, batch inserts via
Repo.insert_all). Snmp.ex shrinks from 2985 to 2742 lines.
DRY refactoring:
- Add per-schema Query modules (Devices.DeviceQuery, Alerts.AlertQuery)
with composable for_organization/for_site/with_status/etc filters;
refactor list_site_devices, count_organization_devices,
count_site_devices, count_site_devices_down, count_organization_alerts
to compose them.
- Introduce create_discovered_checks/6 helper in Snmp; collapses 4 nearly
identical Enum.reduce blocks for sensors/interfaces/processors/storage.
- Unify MAC and ARP evidence collectors behind collect_lookup_evidence/3
(lldp/cdp were already factored).
Pattern matching:
- Replace cond block in infer_role_from_capabilities/1 with a declarative
@role_rules table consulted via Enum.find_value (Elixir 1.19 forbids `in`
with runtime lists in guards, so multi-clause functions weren't an option).
- Replace inline `if since` in get_sensor_readings/2 with a maybe_filter_since
pipe helper.
Performance:
- Replace Enum.each + Repo.insert per evidence row in upsert_link with a
single Repo.insert_all batch (truncates :observed_at to seconds).
Human-centric:
- Decompose build_device_lookup/1 into fetch_lookup_devices, map_ips_to_ids,
map_names_to_ids, map_macs_to_ids.
- Adopt Towerops.Result.map/2 in Snmp.Client.do_get_multiple_sequential
(kept narrow; `with` is preferred over Result.and_then for chained
operations and is already used widely).
CLAUDE.md updates:
- Replace stale main→staging / production-branch deployment notes with the
current flow: PRs deploy to Dokku staging, push to main runs the
ExUnit gate then builds an image; argocd-image-updater rolls production.
- Refresh data-model diagram and references from "Equipment" to "Device"
(post equipment→devices rename migration).
- Correct stale architecture facts: Hammer → in-tree Towerops.RateLimit,
Rust NIF → C NIF (libnetsnmp), gitlab-registry → forgejo-registry,
expand the Oban queue and cron lists, list actual implemented Ecto types.
All 10,228 tests pass.
Categories addressed:
- pattern_match / pattern_match_cov (32): remove dead case/with clauses
that dialyzer proved unreachable from the caller types.
- contract_supertype / extra_range / invalid_contract /
contract_with_opaque (25): narrow @spec declarations to match actual
success typings.
- call / call_without_opaque (18): fix bad calls, narrow User.t to
allow nil for in-memory changeset structs, suppress Ecto.Multi
opaque-type false positives with targeted @dialyzer directives.
- guard_fail / no_return / unused_fun / unknown_function (13): remove
dead || fallbacks, simplify always-true params, cascade-resolve
no_returns via the underlying pattern_match and call fixes.
Real production bug fixed: StormDetector.handle_cast/2 had swapped
`:queue.in` args (`queue |> :queue.in(ts)` which desugars to
`:queue.in(queue, ts)` — wrong argument order). Alert timestamps
were never being enqueued, so storm detection would fail at runtime.
Corrected to `ts |> :queue.in(queue)`.
.dialyzer_ignore.exs: suppress two genuine dep-PLT gaps
(:ranch.get_addr/1 false positive from Bandit's transitive ranch,
and the Cloak.Vault GenServer callback_info on the CI build path).
`mix dialyzer` now: Total errors: 114, Skipped: 114 — passes clean.
Warnings: 88 → 0.
Prefix fire-and-forget calls (PubSub.broadcast, Oban enqueue, Logger,
update_*, etc.) with `_ =` so dialyzer knows the return value is
intentionally discarded. Wrap a few if/case expressions whose
branches produce mixed types the same way.
No behavior changes — only explicit acknowledgement of discarded
returns.
Warnings: 242 → 88.
Phase 1: Foundation Types (100% complete)
- query_helpers: SQL LIKE sanitization with pipe operators
- numeric: Integer parsing with pattern matching guards
- result: Pure Elixir Result monad (map, and_then, unwrap_or)
Phase 2: Ecto Domain Types (100% complete)
- ip_address: IPv4/IPv6 validation using :inet directly
- mac_address: Multi-format MAC parsing (colon/hyphen/dot/compact)
- snmp_oid: OID parsing/manipulation with recursive pattern matching
All 198 tests passing across converted modules.
API changed from Gleam-style {:some/:none to idiomatic {:ok/:error.
Refactored parse_numeric_oid to use with statement, reducing nesting depth.

Migrate three pure-function modules from Elixir to Gleam:
- polling_offset: deterministic hash-based polling offset (pure Gleam, no FFI)
- changelog_parser: text parsing logic in Gleam, thin Elixir wrapper for File I/O
- user_agent_parser: regex-based UA parsing in Gleam with Erlang FFI for
atom-keyed map conversion
Add gleam_regexp dependency for regex support in Gleam modules.
Update all call sites and tests to use Gleam module atoms.

- Add 1.5s debounce to dashboard LiveView for alert events, preventing
excessive re-renders during mass outages where hundreds of alerts fire
simultaneously
- Replace global 'device:events' PubSub topic with org-scoped
'device_events:org:{id}' topics across all broadcasters (device_poller_worker,
sensor_change_detector, discovery) so LiveView processes only receive
events for their tenant
- Update EventLogger GenServer to subscribe to per-org topics dynamically,
with runtime subscription support for newly created orgs
- Add Organizations.list_organization_ids/0 for EventLogger bootstrap
- Increase default DB pool_size from 20 to 25 for production concurrent users

Built-in PagerDuty-equivalent system for on-call scheduling and alert
escalation. Users can now manage schedules, rotation layers, overrides,
and escalation policies directly in the app alongside PagerDuty.
- On-call schedules with rotation layers (daily/weekly/custom), member
management, and temporary overrides
- Escalation policies with ordered rules, timeout-based escalation,
and user/schedule targets
- Automatic escalation via Oban worker with configurable repeat count
- Email notifications via Swoosh for on-call alerts
- Resolver computes who's on-call from layer stacking and overrides
- AlertNotificationWorker integration: starts escalation alongside
PagerDuty, acknowledges/resolves incidents on alert state changes
- Device and organization schemas support escalation_policy_id
- Escalation policy picker on device form
- Schedules nav item with tabbed index (schedules + escalation policies)
- Full CRUD UI for schedules, layers, members, overrides, rules, targets
- 62 LiveView tests, 56 context/schema/resolver/escalation tests
- 26 E2E Playwright tests for smoke and critical path coverage
Ecto schemas for persistent topology model. DeviceLink tracks
connections between devices with confidence scores. DeviceLinkEvidence
records why each link is believed to exist. Device schema gets
device_role and device_role_source fields.
extract sensor change detection from DevicePollerWorker into shared
SensorChangeDetector module. add sensor_value_changed event for non-%
sensors when value differs from last_value. agent channel now detects
changes and updates last_value, matching phoenix poller behavior.
Fixes three critical issues affecting agent-based SNMP polling:
1. MikroTik gauge sensors incorrectly showing 10x values (223°C instead of 22.3°C)
- Root cause: get_int_value() rejected zero values, causing mtxrGaugeUnit
to be treated as nil and bypassing divisor logic
- Fixed: Accept zero values and apply correct divisor=10 for temp/voltage/current/power
2. Empty SNMP community strings sent to agents causing authentication failures
- Root cause: Devices with source="device" but null community weren't falling
back to organization/site inheritance
- Fixed: Enhanced resolve_snmp_community() to fall back to inheritance chain
even when source="device" but community is empty
3. Continuous MikroTik API commands sent every 60s instead of once per 24h
- Root cause: MikroTik jobs built on every poll cycle, not just discovery
- Fixed: Only build MikroTik jobs during discovery phase
Migrations update existing data to fix incorrect divisor values and community
source tracking. Added comprehensive debug logging to diagnose future issues.
Implements compare/2 and newer?/2 functions for comparing semantic versions.
Parsing rules:
- Supports 0-3 part versions (e.g., '7', '7.14', '7.14.1')
- Strips v/V prefix and whitespace
- Ignores suffixes after hyphen or space
- Pads missing parts with 0
- Invalid versions (4+ parts, non-numeric, negative) fall back to 0.0.0
Part of firmware version tracking feature (Phase 2).
- Create firmware_releases table to store latest available firmware versions
- Create device_firmware_history table to track version changes over time
- Add FirmwareRelease and DeviceFirmwareHistory Ecto schemas with validations
- Add comprehensive tests for both schemas (23 tests, 100% coverage)
firmware_releases stores one record per vendor/product_line with latest version.
device_firmware_history is append-only audit log of device firmware changes.
Part of firmware version tracking system for MikroTik (extensible to other vendors).
- Make device name field optional when SNMP is enabled (ICMP Only mode still requires name)
- Add database migration to make name column nullable
- Add conditional validation: name required only when snmp_enabled is false
- Update SNMP discovery to populate device name from sysName when empty
- Add helper text explaining SNMP name population behavior in form
- Add comprehensive tests for device name SNMP population
- Update test mocks to account for NetSnmp profile sensor discovery
Implemented hierarchical SNMP community string inheritance following TDD:
Schema changes:
- Updated Device.changeset to remove required validation for snmp_community
- Community string is now optional when SNMP is enabled
- Allows inheritance from site or organization level
Inheritance hierarchy:
- Device-level community (highest priority)
- Site-level community
- Organization-level community
- nil (no community set at any level)
Form updates:
- extract_snmp_config now resolves inherited community for SNMP testing
- validate_test_snmp_input provides clearer error message about inheritance
- SNMP test uses effective community from hierarchy
Tests:
- Added tests for creating devices with nil/empty community string
- Added comprehensive SNMP configuration inheritance tests
- Tests verify hierarchy: device > site > org > default
- All 28 device tests passing
All 808 tests passing (2 pre-existing alert notifier failures unrelated to this change)
No Credo warnings
