Sweep of remaining swallowed-error sites flagged by an audit pass:
- weather/gefs_client.ex: byte-range download task exits log url + reason
before being surfaced as {:error, _} (matches the HRRR fix).
- live/path_live.ex: terrain-profile load failure, native-duct lookup
failure, and ProfilesFile.read failure now log warnings with path
endpoints / midpoint / valid_time. Previously rendered a degraded
result silently.
- live/rover_live.ex: station-mutation {:error, _} now logs id + reason
instead of dropping into {:noreply, socket}.
- application.ex: the boot-time backfill_missing_home_qth Task.start is
now wrapped in try/rescue. A DB issue at boot would have crashed the
task silently (no Logger handler attached pre-Logger crash format).
Phase 2/3/5 of the building-blockage support:
* Parser streams csv.gz tiles into compact records (centroid, radius,
height) — keeps RAM ~32 B per polygon, drops -1.0-height entries.
* Index buckets records into 0.01° (~1 km) grid cells in a public ETS
table for concurrent reads; max_height_near/3 and records_near/3
scan only the 9 nearest buckets.
* Loader lazily parses any cached quadkey before a Calculate so the
scorer is terrain-only when tiles aren't on disk yet.
* Rover.PathTerrain now treats each path-sample obstacle as
terrain_elev + max_local_building_height, so blocked LOS through
recent construction actually reduces clearance.
* Selecting a candidate pushes a candidate_buildings event with the
buildings near each rover→station path; the hook renders them as
height-coloured circles (yellow <10 m, orange 10-30 m, red >=30 m)
with a tooltip showing height in meters.
ScoreCache held 437 entries × ~1.94 MiB each (~850 MiB per pod) of
{band_mhz, valid_time} grids — data already on NFS as compact .prop
files. NotifyListener and ScoreCacheReconciler both eagerly materialised
every band into ETS on each Rust completion / 60s sweep, so 5 hot
replicas wasted ~4.2 GiB of redundant cache and OOMed at 6 GiB.
Bound the cache to 32 entries with eviction by oldest valid_time, drop
the eager warm loops, and let LiveView callers lazy-fill via the
existing ScoresFile read path. ScoreCacheReconciler had no remaining
purpose and is deleted; runbook + prom_ex counters updated to match.
Steady-state cache footprint ~60 MiB per pod instead of ~850 MiB.
Removes the six OTel packages (opentelemetry, _api, _exporter,
_phoenix, _oban, _bandit) and their 9 transitive deps. Tracing was
only wired for Phoenix/Bandit/Oban auto-instrumentation — PromEx
already covers the metrics we actually use on the status page +
Grafana. Also drops the OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT env var and
its comment block from both deployment manifests.
Wrap a Task.Supervisor in a PartitionSupervisor (one partition per
scheduler) and route the four sustained async_stream callers through
`{:via, PartitionSupervisor, {Microwaveprop.TaskSupervisor, self()}}`.
Concurrent work — the hourly PropagationGridWorker pulling f00-f18
HRRR range downloads, the GEFS worker scoring its grid, and the
Recalibrator's 20-way positive/negative fan-out — no longer funnels
through a single supervisor PID.
Light/one-shot Task.async + Task.start sites (hrrr_client surface/
pressure fan-out, application boot warmup, weather fire-and-forget)
are left alone; partitioning only helps under sustained concurrency.
PromEx.Plugins.Oban counts job exceptions as a Prometheus counter but
does not tell us which worker/queue failed, whether the job is about to
be retried, or the exception class. This adds a telemetry handler on
[:oban, :job, :exception] that:
- emits a single structured Logger.error with worker, queue, job_id,
attempt, max_attempts, retry_exhausted?, kind, reason class, and
args-keys summary (never values — args can contain PII/tokens);
- dispatches opt-in per-worker recovery callbacks
(on_permanent_failure/1 when retries exhausted,
on_transient_failure/1 otherwise);
- catches callback failures so a bug in one worker's recovery path
cannot detach the handler or break logging for other jobs;
- does not emit a second telemetry event, so PromEx counts are not
double-counted.
Handler is attached from Application.start/2 after the Oban supervisor
starts.
Periodic 60s sweep re-warms ScoreCache from /data/scores whenever
{band, valid_time} pairs are on disk but absent in local ETS.
Covers the three silent-fail modes of the NOTIFY/LISTEN path:
dropped notifies on reconnect, missing listener, and stale NFS
reads. Each pod reconciles its own cache — no PubSub fan-out,
no coordination required. Rescue on File.Error handles the
rare window where an atomic-rename write races the reader.
docs/runbook_propagation_pipeline.md names every failure mode
in the Rust↔Elixir seam and what recovers it.
Ecto auto-instrumentation created one span per query, so Oban jobs
running thousands of DB ops produced traces with 8k+ child spans.
Tempo's compactor couldn't ingest them — it stalled long enough to
miss heartbeats, got auto-forgotten from the ring, and crash-looped.
The Elixir grpcbox exporter then blew up trying to reconnect.
Stops the cascade: OTLP endpoint removed from prop and prop-backfill
Deployments, opentelemetry_ecto removed from deps, Phoenix/Oban/Bandit
auto-instrumentation retained. Rust workers still export to Tempo.
Adds the OTel deps (opentelemetry + exporter + phoenix / ecto / oban /
bandit auto-instrumentation helpers) and attaches them in
Application.start/2 so the existing Phoenix, Ecto, Oban, and Bandit
telemetry events flow as OTLP spans without any call-site changes.
Exporter config is gated on OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT in
config/runtime.exs — set in the k8s manifests to the cluster
collector (otel-collector.observability.svc.cluster.local:4317).
When unset we switch traces_exporter to :none so nothing is shipped;
dev/test stays quiet.
Resource attributes tag spans with service.name=microwaveprop and
service.namespace=prop, matching the Rust workers' attribute shape
so Tempo can group the full hourly chain across both languages.
Both the main prop deployment and the backfill deployment get the
env; backfill is still a full BEAM node running enrichment workers,
so its Oban/Ecto spans are worth seeing too.
MrmsFetchWorker fired every 2 min on the :propagation queue, decoding an
MRMS PrecipRate GRIB2 into MrmsCache. Its only consumer,
AsosAdjustmentWorker, is disabled in all configs (dev / config / runtime).
Net effect: 30 GRIB2 decodes/hour of dead work on hot pods.
Removed:
- MrmsFetchWorker, MrmsClient, MrmsCache and their tests
- cron entries in config.exs, dev.exs, runtime.exs
- mrms_req_options stub in test.exs
- MrmsCache from supervision tree in application.ex
- stale MRMS references in PropagationGridWorker docstring and test
Also adds docs/plans/2026-04-19-rust-migration-phase3.md which tracks
the broader Stream A (f00 port) and Stream C (HrrrFetchWorker port)
follow-on work.
Telemetry showed the application-master process holding ~830 MiB of
terms from warm_grid_cache_from_latest_profile — the data lives in
the app master's heap and never GCs because the process is idle.
Running it in a Task.start lets the terms die with the task.
Mark GridCache, MrmsCache, NexradCache, and ScoreCache ETS tables
:compressed. The scored-band-map and HRRR grid data are map-heavy;
compression trims hundreds of MiB at a few percent CPU cost.
Memoise HRRR .idx responses in Microwaveprop.Cache. Published idx
files are immutable for a model run, but the hourly chain re-fetches
the same URL dozens of times across forecast hours. Cuts ~10s per
repeat out of hrrr_fetch_idx.
Force a garbage collect at the end of HrrrFetchWorker.perform to
reclaim the refc binary heap held from GRIB2 ranges before the Oban
producer hands the process its next job.
Two independent wins the latest prod telemetry pointed at:
1. Iowa Environmental Mesonet rate limiter. IEM throttles per source
IP across all in-flight requests, so dropping the `:weather` Oban
queue to 1/pod wasn't enough — workers were still issuing back-to-
back requests inside each job and drawing a steady stream of HTTP
429s (1,396 retryable on the queue). A GenServer-based token bucket
serialises acquire() with a 700ms min gap per pod; three pods give
~4 req/sec cluster-wide, well under the observed 429 threshold.
Wrapped around every IemClient fetch.
2. Parallel HRRR surface + pressure grid fetch. The two products live
in separate wrfsfcf / wrfprsf GRIB files, so their fetch → wgrib2
→ decode pipelines are independent; running them sequentially was
adding ~30s per forecast hour for no reason. Task.async the pair,
merge at the end. Halves per-fh wall time and should unblock some
of the missing-hour cases we saw on the 14:00Z chain.
Wires PromEx with its built-in Application / BEAM / Phoenix / Ecto /
Oban plugins plus a custom `Microwaveprop.PromEx.InstrumentPlugin`
that registers Prometheus histograms for every
`Microwaveprop.Instrument` span (HRRR/NEXRAD/IEM/GEFS/NARR/UWYO
/Elevation fetches, DB batch upserts, terrain analysis, radar
aggregation, propagation score band). Queue-depth gauges from the
10-second poller land at `microwaveprop_oban_queue_count{queue,state}`.
Router forwards `/metrics` to MicrowavepropWeb.MetricsPlug which
optionally requires a bearer token (`PROMETHEUS_AUTH_TOKEN` env var in
runtime.exs); leave it unset to expose metrics publicly and restrict
at the ingress / Cloudflare Access layer instead.
Example external Prometheus scrape config:
scrape_configs:
- job_name: microwaveprop
scrape_interval: 30s
metrics_path: /metrics
scheme: https
authorization:
type: Bearer
credentials: <token>
static_configs:
- targets: ['prop.w5isp.com:443']
Docker final stage bakes BUILD_TIMESTAMP into /app/BUILD_TIMESTAMP via
build-arg (only consumed after mix compile, so earlier layer caching is
preserved). Application.build_timestamp/0 reads the file, falls back to
DEPLOY_TIMESTAMP env, then to compile time. Navbar renders a compact
"Deployed Xm ago" with the full UTC time in the tooltip.
Extend the f00 profile persistence to cover every forecast hour
(f00-f18) so /weather keeps working across pod restarts and shows
forecast-hour atmospheric data without a fresh database. Route the
Weather cold path (latest_grid_valid_time, load_weather_grid,
weather_point_detail) through ProfilesFile first, with the legacy
hrrr_profiles table as a last-resort historical fallback. Warm
GridCache from the latest profile on app start so /weather is hot
the moment a pod boots.
Instead of shelling out to https://gridmap.org/locate/:callsign for
callsign → lat/lon lookups, ports the resolver pipeline from gridmap-web
into this project so the whole flow runs in-process.
New modules:
- Microwaveprop.Qrz — cache facade over the QRZ.com XML callsign API.
Looks up from qrz_callsigns first, falls back to a live fetch, and
upserts the result with a configurable cache_ttl_hours (default
168h / 7 days).
- Microwaveprop.Qrz.Client — HTTP/XML client against
https://xmldata.qrz.com/xml/current/. Holds the session key in an
Agent, transparently re-logs-in on :session_expired, and parses
responses via xmerl.
- Microwaveprop.Qrz.Callsign — Ecto schema for the qrz_callsigns
cache table, binary_id primary key per project convention.
- Microwaveprop.Qrz.Record — slim struct with only the 11 fields
we actually consume (identity, name, grid, address, lat/lon).
The full XML payload stays in the raw :data jsonb column for
anyone who wants the other ~40 QRZ fields.
- Microwaveprop.Geocoder — Req-based client against the Google Maps
Geocoding API. Only called as a fallback when QRZ has no explicit
<lat>/<lon> for the callsign.
- Microwaveprop.CallsignLocation — orchestrator. Reads the
callsign_locations cache, on miss calls Qrz then either uses QRZ's
coords directly or geocodes the formatted address, snaps to an
8-char Maidenhead grid via Microwaveprop.Radio.Maidenhead, and
upserts the result.
Microwaveprop.Radio.CallsignClient.locate/1 is rewritten to delegate
to CallsignLocation.lookup/1 and shape the response back to the
existing {:ok, %{callsign, gridsquare, lat, lon}} contract so the
callers in PathLive and RoverLive don't change.
Wiring:
- priv/repo/migrations/20260413000000_create_qrz_callsigns_and_callsign_locations.exs
creates qrz_callsigns and callsign_locations with unique indexes
on :callsign.
- Microwaveprop.Qrz.Client added to the application supervision tree
so the session Agent is started.
- :xmerl added to extra_applications so the release bundles it.
- config/test.exs wires Req.Test plugs for Microwaveprop.Qrz.Client
and Microwaveprop.Geocoder, forces cache_ttl_hours: 0 so the cache
never short-circuits test-level stubs, and supplies dummy QRZ
credentials.
- config/runtime.exs pulls QRZ_USERNAME / QRZ_PASSWORD / QRZ_AGENT
and GOOGLE_API_KEY from the environment so prod and dev can
configure both upstream keys out of band.
Tests (ported verbatim from gridmap-web):
- test/microwaveprop/qrz/callsign_test.exs — schema/changeset
- test/microwaveprop/qrz_test.exs — cache hit, cache miss, TTL
behavior, upsert on stale, error passthrough, case-insensitive
input
- test/microwaveprop/geocoder_test.exs — success, zero results,
request denied, transport error
- test/microwaveprop/callsign_location_test.exs — end-to-end flow
including the QRZ-lat/lon shortcut and the missing-address error
path
All 1294 tests still pass. Credo strict clean.
MRMS
----
Layer the NOAA MRMS PrecipRate product onto the score grid so rain fade
updates every 2 minutes instead of every hour alongside HRRR. New modules:
- Microwaveprop.Weather.MrmsClient: fetches the latest .grib2.gz off the
NCEP mirror (Req auto-decompresses so no gunzip step), writes the raw
GRIB2 to a temp file, and calls the existing wgrib2 wrapper with the
0.125 propagation grid spec to get interpolated cells. Returns a
%{{lat, lon} => mm_per_hour} map with missing-value sentinels dropped.
- Microwaveprop.Weather.MrmsCache: ETS-backed GenServer mirroring
ScoreCache/GridCache. Caches a single "current" entry keyed by
valid_time with PubSub broadcast so peer nodes stay in sync and only
the Oban leader pays the fetch + regrid cost.
- Microwaveprop.Workers.MrmsFetchWorker: cron every 2 minutes, short-
circuits when the cached valid_time already matches the newest file.
Microwaveprop.Propagation.AsosNudge.compute/4 now takes an optional
rain_grid. When a cell has MRMS rain >= 0.1 mm/hr it gets patched onto
the HRRR profile's `precip_mm` field (the scorer already reads it there)
and the cell is re-scored even with no ASOS station nearby. Cells with
MRMS rain below the threshold aren't touched so dry cells keep their
raw HRRR scores (which have the wind/sky/native-gradient signal that
isn't persisted on HrrrProfile rows and would otherwise be lost).
AsosAdjustmentWorker pulls MrmsCache on every tick and passes the grid
through to AsosNudge.compute/4. Also skips the IemClient error branch
that can never happen and handles the ASOS-empty + MRMS-empty case
explicitly. MrmsCache wired into the supervision tree; MrmsFetchWorker
cron entry added to config.exs and dev.exs.
Four new AsosNudge cases cover MRMS-only re-scoring, threshold gating,
and the wet/dry score delta.
Beacons 500
-----------
Beacon.format_freq/1 and format_mw/1 crashed on whole-number floats
(e.g. 24192.0) because `frac == 0.0` could become false under float
rounding while `trim_trailing_zeros/1` stripped the decimal point,
leaving a 1-element list that couldn't be destructured as [_, frac].
Shared format_number/1 helper handles integer input directly and
pattern-matches both the "int-only" and "int + frac" shapes.
Added stream_data property tests covering the whole microwave range for
both integers and floats to catch this class of bug before prod.
UTC clock flash
---------------
The /weather and /map UTC clocks were empty until the JS hook mounted
post-WebSocket, producing a several-second blank spot on initial load
and a clobber risk on sidebar re-renders. Mount now computes a
server-rendered `initial_utc_clock` string and the template seeds the
element with that plus `phx-update="ignore"` so LiveView morphdom won't
overwrite what the hook writes.
- Add Weather.GridCache: ETS cache of derived HRRR grid rows keyed by
valid_time, cluster-synced via PubSub. Eagerly warmed from
PropagationGridWorker after each upsert so /weather map pan/zoom and
weather_point_detail hit zero DB on warm cache.
- Replace latest_weather_grid DB query path with cache-first lookup +
DB fallback. hrrr_profiles is 42M rows partitioned; pulling 3-10k
rows per viewport on every pan was the main cost.
- ContactLive.Show: defer the heavy enrichment loads (weather, solar,
HRRR, terrain, IEMRE, elevation profile, ITU-R propagation analysis,
data_sources) into a handle_info(:hydrate) that runs after the shell
renders. Initial mount now returns nil placeholders; template already
had :if guards for all of them. Shell-to-first-paint goes from
~500ms-2s down to ~20ms.
- Cache fetch_queue_counts for 5s in ContactLive.Show — oban_jobs group
by query was running on every contact page view.
- Backfill stats: wrap count_unprocessed, fetch_stats, fetch_db_stats
in Microwaveprop.Cache with 2-5s TTLs; bump refresh debounce from 1s
to 2s so bulk enrichment events don't thrash the DB.
- Add contacts_inserted_at_desc_id_desc_idx so /contacts list runs as an
Index Scan (~0.4ms) instead of a Seq Scan + top-N heapsort (~77ms on
58k rows)
- Add Microwaveprop.Cache: tiny ETS-backed TTL cache for memoizing
expensive-but-stale-tolerant values
- Cache total_entries for unsearched /contacts page loads (30s TTL,
invalidated on insert)
- Cache the entire /contacts/map payload (pre-encoded JSON + band list),
moving load_contacts into Radio.contact_map_payload; invalidated on
new contact insert. Mount goes from ~150-300ms to ~5ms.
- Fix /map overlay blinking on load: reuse the Leaflet GridLayer across
renderScores calls and just redraw() against the updated ScoreGrid,
instead of removeLayer + new layer which flashed between tile regens
- Make mode optional on submission: schema change (null: true),
submission_changeset no longer requires it, blank strings normalise to
nil, CSV import accepts 6-column (no mode) or 7-column layouts
- core_components .input adds a red asterisk to labels when required,
giving users a visual cue for which fields must be filled on /submit
- ScoreCache stores {band, valid_time} as %{{lat, lon} => score} map so
point lookups are O(1); adds fetch_point/4 and valid_times/1
- available_valid_times/1 reads directly from ScoreCache when warm,
falls back to DB on cold start
- point_forecast/3 iterates cached valid_times and uses fetch_point/4
instead of hitting the DB per click
- NexradCache: node-local ETS cache of decoded n0q PNG pixel buffers
keyed by 5-minute rounded timestamp; skips ~1-5s HTTP+decode on
concurrent/repeat clicks within the same window
- MapLive: start_async the rain_scatter fetch so point_detail renders
immediately with a pending marker; push rain_scatter_update when
NEXRAD resolves
- MapLive: preload all 18 remaining forecast hours for the current
viewport after mount/band change/propagation_updated; client caches
them and renders timeline scrubs instantly without a server roundtrip.
Adds set_selected_time event for fast-path state sync.
- Propagation map JS: forecastCache map + drawScatterMarkers helper,
timeline click uses preloaded cache when available
- Add ScoreCache GenServer with node-local ETS table keyed by
{band, valid_time}, subscribed to "propagation:cache" PubSub topic so
every pod stays in sync with a single hourly compute
- scores_at/3 checks cache first, falls back to DB and populates on miss
- PropagationGridWorker warms and broadcasts the cache for each band
after every forecast hour upsert; prunes >2h old entries
- Replace per-pixel string-keyed Map with flat Int8Array over the CONUS
grid in propagation_map_hook.ts to eliminate allocations in the tile
rasterization hot loop (interpolateScore / propagationReach)
- libcluster with Kubernetes IP strategy for pod discovery
- RBAC for pod list/get, POD_IP from downward API, shared cookie
- LiveDashboard at /dashboard for all environments
- Database triggers on contacts and oban_jobs fire pg_notify on
status/state changes
- RepoListener GenServer subscribes via Postgrex.Notifications and
broadcasts to PubSub
- Backfill dashboard subscribes to PubSub instead of 2-second polling
- Eliminates periodic SELECT queries, updates arrive instantly
- Nx, Axon, EXLA, Polaris deps restricted to only: [:dev, :test]
- model.ex and training mix tasks moved to lib_ml/ (compiled via
elixirc_paths in dev/test only)
- load_ml_model uses Code.ensure_loaded? + apply/3 to avoid
compile-time references to ML modules in production
- Verified: MIX_ENV=prod compiles clean with no ML warnings
ML Integration:
- Load trained model at app startup, cache compiled predict fn in persistent_term
- Grid worker uses batched ML prediction (10K chunks) when model loaded,
falls back to algorithm scorer when not
- ML score replaces composite, algorithm factor scores preserved for detail view
- Fix process explosion: single EXLA call per chunk instead of per-grid-point
QSO Features:
- Callsign search (ILIKE on station1/station2) with trigram indexes
- Reciprocal QSO grouping (same pair, same band, same hour)
- Wider layout (max-w-7xl) for data table pages
- QSO Training Data link on map page
Infrastructure:
- Re-enable hourly propagation grid worker in dev
- Track ML model weights in git for Docker builds
- Add btree indexes on qsos (timestamp, band, distance_km)
- Remove nav icons from layout header
Replaces the one-shot startup Task with a GenServer that checks every
5 minutes whether propagation scores are older than 2 hours. If stale,
enqueues a PropagationGridWorker job (with dedup check to avoid double
queuing). Disabled in test env to avoid SQL Sandbox conflicts.
On app start, check if latest scores are older than 2 hours. If so,
immediately enqueue a PropagationGridWorker job. Covers app restarts,
deploys, and missed cron ticks.
Oban cron worker runs every 4 hours, finds QSOs without weather data,
discovers nearby ASOS/sounding stations, and enqueues WeatherFetchWorker
jobs. Migrations run automatically on app start in production.
