Two issues spotted in pg_stat_user_tables:
1. Most `hrrr_profiles` partitions have `last_autoanalyze IS NULL`.
The partitions are append-only from the hourly grid worker, so
autovacuum never crosses the analyze threshold — but without
stats the planner falls back to estimates and picks bad joins
on per-QSO lookups.
2. `contacts`, `grid_tasks`, `hrrr_fetch_tasks`, and
`contact_common_volume_radar` see high UPDATE volumes
(enrichment status flips, queue claim/complete cycles, mechanism
classifier writes) but only accrue ~5% dead before the default
20% / 10% autovacuum triggers fire. BackfillEnqueueWorker's
status-priority ORDER BY + the Rust workers' FOR UPDATE SKIP
LOCKED claim scan both want fresher stats than that.
Changes:
- Migration `20260424204656_tune_autovacuum_for_high_churn` sets
per-table `autovacuum_*_scale_factor` + `_threshold = 50` on the
four tables above. Aggressive enough to keep stats current;
tame enough that vacuum doesn't thrash the Turing Pi 2 Postgres
node. Reversible.
- `Weather.analyze_all/1` walks `pg_stat_user_tables`, runs
`ANALYZE` on every table not auto-analyzed in the last 6 h,
reports counts. Meant to be invoked once via
`bin/microwaveprop rpc 'Microwaveprop.Weather.analyze_all()'`
after deploy to seed statistics on the cold partitions;
idempotent on re-run.
No translations are actually maintained and no UI is shipped in a
non-English locale. Replaced the handful of gettext(...) calls in
core_components + layouts with their literal English strings, and
rewrote translate_error/1 as a small %{key} interpolator over the
Ecto changeset error tuple.
Removes gettext + expo (compile dep). sutra_ui stays — it's a
transitive dep of live_table's TableComponent.
Replaces the SVG schematic on /eme with a textured WebGL scene: NASA
Blue Marble Earth, real-size Moon, outbound beam, dashed return ray
to the sub-lunar point, and a red shading on the anti-moon hemisphere
that marks who can't see the Moon (outside the bounce footprint).
Three.js (~680 kB) now lives in its own chunk; esbuild --splitting
keeps it out of the main bundle so it only loads when a user hits
/eme. Main app.js drops from 1.6 MB to 922 kB.
Also swaps the Elevation/SNR rows so the badge comes before the number.
Operators want a place to jot observations that aren't captured by
the structured fields — weather anecdotes, propagation mode
commentary, equipment details, band conditions. Add a text column
on contacts plus the two ingest paths users submit through:
* /submit single-contact form gets a 3-row textarea under the
other fields. Optional, max 2000 chars, with a live length cap
via maxlength. Whitespace-only input collapses to NULL so the
column reflects "no notes" rather than an empty string.
* CSV importer recognises a `notes` (or `note`) column via the
existing header_aliases table and flows values straight through
submission_changeset. Sample template gets a matching example
row with embedded commas so the quoted-field round-trip is
exercised on download.
ADIF import and the refinement/refinement-notify paths are out of
scope — users specifically asked for CSV + single-contact. Tests
cover the changeset (accept/blank/over-length), CSV header parsing
(plain + RFC-4180 quoted), and LiveView form submit end-to-end.
Batched from a system-wide review pass.
**Rate-limit + transient-error log hygiene**
- WeatherFetchWorker: classify IEM HTTP 429 as {:snooze, 300} instead
of {:error}. Stops Oban.PerformError stack-trace spam on every
routine rate-limit during backfill, keeps the retry semantics.
- IonosphereFetchWorker: compress GIRO TLS :unknown_ca error from a
~400-char inspect blob to 'TLS unknown_ca (CA bundle missing)'.
- FreshnessMonitor: log only when an enqueue actually lands (the
Oban unique conflict case was silently dropping jobs but still
producing 'enqueuing grid worker' info lines every 5 minutes).
**Perf**
- Rust grid_level_keys(): pre-format 'TMP:{p} mb' / DPT / HGT keys
once via OnceLock instead of format!()'ing per-cell. Removes ~3.6M
String allocations per f01..f18 chain step across pipeline.rs,
hrrr_points.rs. Same for the wgrib2 :(TMP|DPT|HGT): pattern in
hrrr_points.process_batch (sfc_pattern / prs_pattern OnceLock).
- MapLive preload_forecast: Task.async_stream with max_concurrency=4
replaces the 18-wide Enum.map serial walk. Forecast cache warms
~4× faster after a band change, with ordering preserved.
- grid_tasks: partial composite index on (run_time DESC,
forecast_hour ASC) WHERE status='queued' AND kind='forecast',
matching the Rust claim query's ORDER BY. Drops the old
status-only partial that forced a sort per claim.
**Correctness**
- ContactImportWorker: add Oban unique:[keys: [:import_run_id,
:offset]]. Was missing on a worker whose perform() does a
non-idempotent atomic counter increment — a retry would double-
count imported rows.
- CommonVolumeRadarWorker: x_min..x_max default step is -1 when
x_min > x_max, triggering a runtime deprecation warning. Force
Range.new(_, _, 1) explicitly.
**Cleanup**
- Drop unused tmp_dir parameter from hrrr_point_worker + its
process_batch signature.
Weather.find_nearest_hrrr/3 and Weather.find_nearest_native_profile/3
run a three-range scan gated first by a ±1h valid_time window, then
by a ±0.07° lat/lon box. The existing unique `(lat, lon, valid_time)`
index is only usable on its `lat` prefix for these queries, forcing
Postgres to scan wide lat slices before applying the valid_time
filter — expensive on the Turing Pi 2 node.
Add a `(valid_time, lat, lon)` composite so valid_time leads,
collapsing the search to a narrow btree slice inside a single
partition before the lat/lon box filter kicks in.
`hrrr_profiles` is RANGE-partitioned by valid_time, so
CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY is applied per partition and the resulting
indexes are attached to a parent index created ON ONLY the partitioned
table. `hrrr_native_profiles` is a regular table, so the concurrent
build runs directly on it.
Rework of d61fbd3's dialyzer suppression: the 4 warnings from
LiveTable.LiveResource's macro expansion are now fixed at the
root rather than hidden via .dialyzer_ignore.exs.
Changes:
- Delete .dialyzer_ignore.exs and remove ignore_warnings from
mix.exs. No more hidden suppressions.
- New MicrowavepropWeb.LiveTableResource shim that wraps
use LiveTable.LiveResource and overrides:
* maybe_subscribe/1 — explicit :ok = on Phoenix.PubSub.subscribe/2
(previously discarded, tripping :unmatched_return).
* handle_info/2 — explicit _ = on File.rm, Process.send_after.
Switch all 4 LiveTable-using LiveViews (contact_live/index,
beacon_live/index, admin/contact_edit_live, user_management_live/index)
to use MicrowavepropWeb.LiveTableResource instead.
- New priv/dep_patches/live_table-0.4.1.patch adds _ = in front of
LiveTable.LiveSelectHelpers.restore_live_select_from_params/2 in
the dep's macro-expanded handle_params/3. The call's return was
silently discarded, tripping the fourth warning per LiveView.
- New lib/mix/tasks/deps.patch.ex applies every
priv/dep_patches/*.patch to its target dep idempotently after
mix deps.get. Wired into the :setup alias + overridden
mix deps.get so the patch survives cache regeneration in CI.
- Other modified files in this commit are the spec-coverage
additions from the parallel agent pass (beacons.ex,
commercial.ex, propagation.ex, weather.ex, narr_client.ex,
run_timing.ex, 3 workers) — tighter specs for bounds, tuple
shapes, schema-typed params. Dialyzer remains at 0 after
the changes.
Upstream TODO: send a PR for the live_table `_ =` fix. Once
merged and released, drop the patch + mix task + bump the dep.
mix dialyzer --format short | grep ^lib/ | wc -l -> 0
mix test: 2165 tests, 2 pre-existing flakes (MapLive timestamp +
PropagationPrune ScoresFile), 0 regressions.
Column name now matches the type key used everywhere else:
:hrrr -> hrrr_status, :weather -> weather_status,
:terrain -> terrain_status, :mechanism -> mechanism_status
Drops the @status_column_overrides remap in BackfillEnqueueWorker
(status_column/1 is now a straight :"#{type}_status" derivation) and
the long-form references in Contact, ContactWeatherEnqueueWorker,
and MechanismClassifyWorker. Migration is a metadata-only RENAME
COLUMN + RENAME INDEX — safe to land in prod (no table rewrite,
brief catalog lock only).
Phase 3 Stream C Elixir-side: HrrrFetchWorker is deleted; per-QSO HRRR
enrichment now writes to the new hrrr_fetch_tasks table for the Rust
hrrr-point-worker to drain.
Table shape:
- one row per valid_time (primary key) with a JSONB array of
{lat, lon} points
- UPSERT on conflict: array-union of points, status flips back to
queued if previously done/failed so a backfill re-scan naturally
refills the queue for Rust
Elixir changes:
- new migration 20260419231502_create_hrrr_fetch_tasks
- new Microwaveprop.Weather.HrrrPointEnqueuer with enqueue/1 and
enqueue_for_contacts/1. Pre-2014 contacts (NARR's territory)
are skipped here so hrrr_status can pin them to :unavailable.
- ContactWeatherEnqueueWorker: build_hrrr_jobs/1 removed; single-
contact path and batch perform/1 both route through
HrrrPointEnqueuer.enqueue_for_contacts/1. A placeholder jobs-list
is kept just to feed mark_hrrr_status!.
- contact_live/show.ex retry button enqueues via the same path.
- :hrrr queue removed from dev/config/runtime.exs
- HrrrFetchWorker module + test deleted
BackfillEnqueueWorker scans continue to flow through
ContactWeatherEnqueueWorker.enqueue_for_contact (unchanged), so the
30-min reconcile refills hrrr_fetch_tasks automatically.
4 new tests cover the routing, pre-2014 skip, UPSERT-union, and
status-reset-on-reschedule behaviour. Rust-side hrrr-point-worker
binary + k8s deployment land in the next commits.
Prep for Stream A of Phase 3 rust migration: f00's native-duct merge,
NEXRAD, and commercial-link enrichment move to Rust via the same
grid_tasks work queue. kind='analysis' (single row per run) vs
kind='forecast' (18 rows per run) lets one Rust worker dispatch on
payload type without a second table.
Forecast default keeps existing Rust claim_next behaviour unchanged
during cutover.
Extracts the memory-hostile HRRR fetch → decode → score pipeline for
forecast hours 1–18 into a separate Rust service (`prop-grid-rs`).
Elixir retains f00 with its native-duct + NEXRAD + commercial-link
enrichment; Rust handles the other 18 steps per hourly chain.
Hand-off via a new `grid_tasks` table (`FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED` claim
from Rust, Postgrex `NOTIFY propagation_ready` back to Elixir). Rust
writes the same on-disk score-grid format Elixir already uses, to the
same `/data/scores` NFS tree. Phase 1 ships in shadow mode with
PROP_SCORES_DIR=/data/scores_shadow.
Rust crate layout at `rust/prop_grid_rs/` (1:1 module parity with the
Elixir source it ports):
- grid, region, band_config, scores_file, sounding_params
- scorer: all 10 factors + composite. Matches the Elixir scorer
byte-for-byte across 115 golden-fixture samples (5 scenarios
× 23 bands).
- decoder: wgrib2 subprocess + Fortran-record lola-binary parser
- fetcher: HRRR URL derivation + idx cache (1h TTL) + 8-way
parallel byte-range downloads with 429/5xx retry
- pipeline: end-to-end chain step, f00 rejected at the boundary
- db: sqlx grid_tasks claim/complete + propagation_ready NOTIFY
- bin/worker: tokio main loop, JSON logs, SIGTERM-safe
91 Rust tests + clippy -D warnings clean. 2,158 Elixir tests green.
Elixir additions:
- `GridTaskEnqueuer` seeds fh=1..18 rows from
`PropagationGridWorker.seed_chain/0`
- `NotifyListener` LISTEN → warm `ScoreCache` → PubSub fan-out
- `ShadowComparator` diffs prod vs shadow `.ntms` bodies
- `mix rust.golden` task writes the Rust-side golden fixture
k8s: new `deployment-grid-rs.yaml` pinned to talos5 (32 GB NUC) via
`prop-grid-rs=primary` nodeSelector + `workload=grid-rs:NoSchedule`
toleration, 512 Mi limit, sharing the existing NFS `/data` mount.
The plan document is at `plans/vivid-hatching-quail.md` (local to my
workstation); phases 2 (cutover) and 3 (talos5 concurrency tuning)
follow after 72h of shadow-mode parity.
Contacts can be marked private at submit time (single form, CSV
import, ADIF import) and edit time. Private contacts are hidden
from the public map, the public /u/callsign profile, and the
browse table for anonymous and non-owning viewers. The original
submitter and admins see them inline on the browse table with a
"Yes" badge, and the detail page shows a lock icon. Non-authorized
viewers get a 404 on the detail page.
Add optional height1_ft/height2_ft to contact schema, submit form, and
edit form (direct + suggest-edit paths). Heights flow through to the
elevation-profile terrain analysis so clearance and diffraction are
computed from the actual antenna height instead of a 10-ft default.
Editing heights resets terrain_status and re-enqueues
TerrainProfileWorker so the stored path analysis picks up the new
geometry.
Also fix mark_likely_duct/3: the pattern was grabbing the element
instead of the index, so no duct ever got flagged as the likely
propagation path even when extract_ducts returned a valid layer.
Lays the groundwork for a Day 2-7 propagation outlook driven by NCEP
GEFS ensemble-mean output, picking up where HRRR's 18-hour horizon
leaves off.
- GefsClient: NOMADS URL builder, forecast-hour list (3h to +240,
6h to +384), ensemble-mean message inventory, and a Magnus
dewpoint derivation (pgrb2a publishes RH rather than Td)
- gefs_profiles table + GefsProfile schema mirroring hrrr_profiles
so the scorer can run over rows from either source
- Weather.upsert_gefs_profile/1 and upsert_gefs_profiles_batch/1
No worker or UI yet — those land in follow-up commits.
Classifies every contact's likely non-LOS propagation mechanism and
persists the result on contacts.propagation_mechanism. Mechanism is
determined in priority order:
1. user_declared_prop_mode (ADIF PROP_MODE from the operator log)
2. EME — moon-ephemeris check, ≥2m band, >1800 km path
3. aurora — Kp≥5 + high-lat path, 50-432 MHz
4. sporadic-E — foEs × 5 ≥ band_mhz, 400-2500 km path
5. meteor_scatter — ±3 days of a shower peak, VHF/UHF
6. rain_scatter — common-volume radar heavy rain, 5-11 GHz ≤800 km
7. tropo_duct — HRRR native_best_duct ≥ band or ducting_detected
8. line_of_sight — ≤50 km path
9. troposcatter — default
Persisted via MechanismClassifyWorker (queue: :mechanism, unique on
contact_id). Submit-time enqueue path includes :mechanism by default;
BackfillEnqueueWorker cron now handles :mechanism alongside existing
types so prod continuously backfills any contact with
propagation_mechanism_status in (:pending, :queued, :failed). Also
added :radar to the cron's type list so common-volume radar backfill
runs automatically rather than only via `mix radar_backfill`.
New modules:
- Microwaveprop.Propagation.MoonEphemeris — Meeus low-precision moon
position, accuracy ±1° — enough for the mutual-visibility EME test
- Microwaveprop.Propagation.MechanismClassifier — plug-in priority
chain over the evidence map
- Microwaveprop.Workers.MechanismClassifyWorker — assembles inputs
from HRRR / native profiles / common-volume radar / solar_indices /
ionosonde + calls the classifier
ADIF importer now reads PROP_MODE into user_declared_prop_mode so
operator-tagged mechanisms (EME/ES/MS/RS/AS/AUR) become ground truth.
Add a propagation_run_timings table so the wall-clock duration of each
(run_time, forecast_hour) step is queryable long after the run is over.
Keyed by (run_time, forecast_hour) with a status column that captures
whether the step succeeded or bailed out, and an error string on
failure.
PropagationGridWorker stamps every step (ok and failed) via
Propagation.record_run_timing/1. Timing inserts are wrapped in rescue +
changeset-error handling so the instrumentation can never brick the
chain.
Implements the subset of the isitagentready.com checklist that maps to
real capabilities of this site:
- RFC 8288 Link headers on every browser response advertising
service-doc (/algo), about, privacy-policy, and sitemap.
- Markdown-for-Agents content negotiation: requests with
Accept: text/markdown for / or /algo return real markdown
(curated summary + verbatim algo.md) with x-markdown-tokens hint.
Other paths still 406 — no synthesizing markdown from LiveView HTML.
- Content-Signal directive in robots.txt declaring
search=yes, ai-train=no, ai-input=no.
- RFC 9727 API catalog at /.well-known/api-catalog with the sole
public endpoint (/api/contacts/map) linking status -> /health and
service-desc -> /openapi.json (a new minimal OpenAPI 3.0 spec).
- Agent Skills Discovery index at /.well-known/agent-skills/index.json
listing two skill documents (fetch-contacts, read-algorithm) with
sha256 digests computed at compile time; documents served at
/.well-known/agent-skills/{name}/SKILL.md.
Skipped (don't match actual site capabilities): Web Bot Auth JWKS,
OAuth/OIDC discovery, MCP server card.
For large CSVs (e.g. the 34k-row ARRL dump), the synchronous commit
path blocked for minutes and a crash mid-commit left no audit trail.
Refactor to run inserts + enrichment enqueues via Oban.
- New import_runs table: stores preview rows + running counters (total,
processed, imported, refined, error) + status + errors map + timing.
- New :contact_import Oban queue (limit 4) + ContactImportWorker.
Args: {import_run_id, offset, limit}. Each chunk (100 rows) inserts
its slice via CsvImport.commit_rows/1, atomically increments counters
in one update_all, flips status, and broadcasts progress on
'csv_import:<id>' PubSub topic.
- CsvImport.commit_rows/1 extracted from commit/1 (back-compat preserved).
New CsvImport.enqueue/2 persists the run + dispatches N chunk jobs.
Also: submit page copy updated from '902 MHz and up' to '50 MHz and up'
matching the band allowlist expansion done earlier.
LiveView UI for /imports/:id is a separate commit.
57,186 prod contacts stored pos1/pos2 with 'lng'; 1,133 used 'lon'.
Every Elixir caller carried a `pos["lon"] || pos["lng"]` fallback
— which just caused a SQL widget to silently miscount 98% of contacts
(count_narr_done used `pos1->>'lon'` directly, no fallback, so every
lng-keyed row returned NULL and failed the coverage check).
- Migration rewrites every pos1/pos2 JSONB in place, renaming 'lng' to
'lon' and dropping 'lng'.
- Removes all 20+ `|| pos["lng"]` fallbacks across lib/, workers,
scorer, weather, radio.ex, contact show view, and recalibrator.
- lib_ml/propagation_analyze.ex SQL now reads pos1->>'lon' directly
(was reading 'lng' only, which would have broken after migration).
- priv/repo/import_contacts.exs one-time seed script now emits 'lon'
with string keys, matching production shape.
- Test fixtures in 4 test files normalized to 'lon'.
- Two lng-characterization tests deleted — nonsensical post-normalize.
- Updated notebook + old import_weather script to match.
- JS hook contact_map_hook.ts TypeScript type narrowed to 'lon'.
The US 9cm amateur allocation was cut from 3300-3500 to 3300-3450 MHz
in 2020, so 3456 (the legacy weak-signal calling frequency) is no
longer in-band. Move the canonical key to 3400, migrate existing
contacts, and keep 3456 input resolving to 3400 via the
nearest-band snap so historical ADIF/CSV logs still import cleanly.
Adds the second ionospheric data source layer. Polls NOAA SWPC's free
public JSON services every 5 minutes for three products:
* Planetary K-index (1-min cadence) → geomagnetic_observations
* 10.7 cm solar flux (hourly) → solar_flux_observations
* GOES X-ray flux (1-min, 0.1-0.8nm long-wave band only) →
solar_xray_observations
All three products feed HF / Es scoring inputs that the propagation
engine will start using in a follow-up commit:
* Kp drives HF absorption and Es damping (memory notes Kp is inversely
correlated with tropo/Es stability).
* F10.7 is the SSN proxy for ITU-R P.533 HF MUF prediction.
* GOES X-ray long-wave flux is the short-wave fade (SWF) / D-layer
absorption proxy — a C-class flare starts attenuating HF within
seconds of the X-ray peak.
New context `Microwaveprop.SpaceWeather` exposes `upsert_*/1` and
`latest_*/0` per product; `SpaceWeatherFetchWorker` pulls all three
independently so one endpoint's outage doesn't block the others.
Fixtures captured from live SWPC endpoints on 2026-04-15 for the
parser tests.
Not yet wired into scoring — that's a separate commit.
First step toward physics-based HF / sporadic-E scoring. Polls GIRO's
DIDBase tabular endpoint every 10 minutes for two US ionosondes
(Millstone Hill MHJ45, Alpena AL945), parses the plain-text response
into observation rows, and upserts into a new ionosonde_observations
table keyed on (station_code, valid_time).
This gets foEs (E-layer sporadic critical frequency) into the database
as a direct measurement — the key input for predicting 144 MHz Es
openings via ITU-R P.534-6. foF2 + MUFD are the F2-layer inputs for
HF MUF predictions.
Not yet wired into scoring. Boulder/Wallops/Austin/Idaho/Point Arguello
are in the GIRO catalog but were silent when probed — add them back
if/when they come online.
Next steps: SWPC JSON (Kp, F10.7, sunspot), GOES X-ray flux, D-RAP text,
and the P.534-6 Es scoring factor that uses foEs at midpoint for the
144/440 band configs.
Full cutover: the propagation_scores Postgres table is gone, and
the binary files under /data/scores are the sole source of truth
for the map render path. Three stacked changes:
1. New migration drops the propagation_scores table and its indexes
(the earlier tuning migrations for it were already applied and
are now no-ops against a missing table, which is fine — Ecto
just runs them on fresh environments).
2. Propagation context is gutted of every GridScore reference.
replace_scores/2 writes files only. upsert_scores/2 is deleted.
load_scores_from_db, available_valid_times_from_db,
point_detail_from_db, point_forecast_from_db, fetch_factors,
coalesce_factors, the Postgres side of prune_old_scores, and
the Postgres fallbacks in latest/earliest_valid_time are all
removed. point_detail always returns an empty factors map now
since factor breakdowns were retired with the table.
3. Deleted modules:
- Propagation.GridScore (the schema)
- Propagation.ScorerDiff (read factors from the table)
- Propagation.AsosNudge (helper for AsosAdjustmentWorker)
- Workers.AsosAdjustmentWorker (its cron was already disabled)
- Mix.Tasks.ScorerDiff (wrapper around the deleted module)
And their tests. AdminTaskWorker's scorer_diff task is a
logging no-op so any queued Oban rows drain cleanly.
Release.scorer_diff stays as a stub that tells the operator.
propagation_prune_worker_test rewritten to exercise ScoresFile
pruning. propagation_test.exs rewritten to use replace_scores +
ScoresFile throughout (no more GridScore / upsert_scores paths).
The scoring+upsert phase was ~4m40s per forecast hour and dominated
wall time. Three stacked optimizations attack it from different
angles.
replace_scores/2 is a new hot-path writer that does DELETE WHERE
valid_time = $1 followed by a plain insert_all (no ON CONFLICT
resolution). The chain worker rewrites the full (valid_time, all
bands) slice every forecast hour, so conflict detection was pure
waste. AsosAdjustmentWorker still uses upsert_scores because it
only rewrites the subset of cells near a station.
factors is now nullable. Forecast hours f01-f18 pass factors: nil
so the JSONB encode + toast write is skipped entirely — roughly
halves the data volume per run. point_detail/4 coalesces nil to
an empty map so the JS popup renders without a TypeError, and
scorer_diff only pulls the most recent valid_time that still has
factors (the f00 row).
propagation_scores is now UNLOGGED, so inserts bypass WAL entirely.
Durability tradeoff: an unclean shutdown truncates the table, but
PropagationGridWorker rebuilds it from HRRR every 3h so a lost
table is re-populated within one cron cycle.
Also adds docs/plans/2026-04-14-duckdb-scores-storage.md — a
speculative plan for a flat-file / DuckDB rewrite with explicit
trigger conditions for when to pick it up (partitioning deferred
too; revisit only if these three don't solve it).
Replaces the two-phase (algorithm-scores pretrain + QSO-distance
finetune) pipeline with a single unbiased phase that samples
hrrr_profiles stratified uniformly by calendar month and trains on the
physical algorithm score from Scorer.composite_score/2.
Previous Phase 2 target was 'within-band distance percentile' computed
from the contacts table. Because non-contest months have almost no
QSOs, the model learned 'these conditions → QSO happened → good' and
implicitly 'no QSO → bad', so it systematically under-predicted
propagation during quiet months (Feb, Mar, Nov). The new pipeline
decouples the target from QSO activity entirely.
Stratification uses ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY month ORDER BY
random()) so every month contributes the same number of profile rows
regardless of contest-driven density. Each profile is exploded into
one training row per band.
Trained model: val RMSE=1.66 pts, R²=0.9744 on 840k rows (10k
profiles/month × 7 bands, 50 epochs). Monthly sanity check at fixed
weather conditions (10 GHz, 15°C/10°C) now shows Jan=Feb=Mar=68 — the
model no longer penalizes quiet months.
The single Era5MonthBatchWorker pinned an Oban slot for the full 30-45
min a CDS month-tile takes to assemble, and lost the work entirely on a
rolling deploy because the in-flight Task died with the pod. This splits
the flow into two tiny workers and persists the CDS job IDs so deploys
survive.
New pipeline:
1. Era5SubmitWorker (:era5_submit queue) — POSTs both CDS requests in
parallel, writes an `era5_cds_jobs` row with the returned job IDs,
and enqueues an Era5PollWorker scheduled +5 min. ~1s of real work.
Short-circuits when the month-tile is already cached or when a row
already exists (in-flight from a previous attempt).
2. Era5PollWorker (:era5_poll queue) — reads the row, calls
Era5Client.check_status/1 for both CDS job IDs, and:
- returns {:snooze, 300} if either job is still running (Oban
re-schedules without counting an attempt and releases the slot
immediately — a pod can keep dozens of tile-months in flight
without pinning workers)
- streams both GRIB files to disk via Req into: File.stream!,
decodes via Wgrib2.extract_grid_messages_from_file, bulk-inserts
via Era5BatchClient.decode_and_insert/6, deletes the row, and
DELETEs both completed jobs from CDS to free server-side quota
- if either leg CDS-reports failed, deletes the row + both CDS
jobs and returns {:error, reason}
Era5Client gains four testable building blocks:
submit_job/2 (bare POST → {:ok, job_id})
check_status/1 (GET → :running | {:done, src} | {:failed, reason})
download_source_to_file/3 (streams {:url, href} or writes {:body, bin})
delete_job/1 (DELETE /jobs/:id, treats 200/202/204/404 as :ok)
All Req calls now route through `era5_req_options` so tests can stub
CDS responses via Req.Test.stub(Era5Client, fn).
Era5MonthBatchWorker is retained as a thin forwarder to Era5SubmitWorker
so any jobs already in the :era5_batch queue on prod pods drain cleanly
on the next rolling deploy. Safe to delete in a follow-up.
Adds era5_cds_jobs table with a unique index on
(year, month, tile_lat, tile_lon) so duplicate submits collapse.
New queue config in runtime.exs:
era5_submit: local_limit 4, rate_limit 30/hour (burst protection)
era5_poll: local_limit 20 (polls are cheap GETs)
era5_batch: kept at 1 for legacy job drain, delete next cycle
Four independent wins from a perf audit of the era5_batch worker path:
1. Parallel CDS submits per job. fetch_single_level_month and
fetch_pressure_level_month have no ordering dependency — each blocks
30+ min on CDS queue/download — so running them in two linked Tasks
halves wall time for every job in the backlog.
2. Stream GRIB2 downloads directly to disk via Req `into: File.stream!`.
A month-tile GRIB is 50–200 MB and was previously slurped into the
BEAM heap and then written back out to a temp file before wgrib2 ran.
New Era5Client.submit_and_download_to_file/3 skips both copies. Saves
100–200 MB heap per worker × 12 concurrent ≈ 1.2–2.4 GB peak under
full parallelism. Partial files are removed on HTTP error.
3. Wgrib2.extract_grid_messages_from_file/3 lets batch decoding read the
streamed temp file directly. The binary variant still exists for the
single-point path and now delegates through the same helper.
4. Composite index (valid_time, lat, lon) on era5_profiles, matching the
three-range scan used by Weather.find_nearest_era5 (contact detail +
path profiles) and StatusLive.count_era5_done (status page EXISTS
subquery). The unique index on (lat, lon, valid_time) couldn't serve
it efficiently.
Also bumps the bulk insert chunk size 2k → 4k to halve insert round-trips
per month-tile (still well under Postgres' 65k-parameter cap).
Instead of shelling out to https://gridmap.org/locate/:callsign for
callsign → lat/lon lookups, ports the resolver pipeline from gridmap-web
into this project so the whole flow runs in-process.
New modules:
- Microwaveprop.Qrz — cache facade over the QRZ.com XML callsign API.
Looks up from qrz_callsigns first, falls back to a live fetch, and
upserts the result with a configurable cache_ttl_hours (default
168h / 7 days).
- Microwaveprop.Qrz.Client — HTTP/XML client against
https://xmldata.qrz.com/xml/current/. Holds the session key in an
Agent, transparently re-logs-in on :session_expired, and parses
responses via xmerl.
- Microwaveprop.Qrz.Callsign — Ecto schema for the qrz_callsigns
cache table, binary_id primary key per project convention.
- Microwaveprop.Qrz.Record — slim struct with only the 11 fields
we actually consume (identity, name, grid, address, lat/lon).
The full XML payload stays in the raw :data jsonb column for
anyone who wants the other ~40 QRZ fields.
- Microwaveprop.Geocoder — Req-based client against the Google Maps
Geocoding API. Only called as a fallback when QRZ has no explicit
<lat>/<lon> for the callsign.
- Microwaveprop.CallsignLocation — orchestrator. Reads the
callsign_locations cache, on miss calls Qrz then either uses QRZ's
coords directly or geocodes the formatted address, snaps to an
8-char Maidenhead grid via Microwaveprop.Radio.Maidenhead, and
upserts the result.
Microwaveprop.Radio.CallsignClient.locate/1 is rewritten to delegate
to CallsignLocation.lookup/1 and shape the response back to the
existing {:ok, %{callsign, gridsquare, lat, lon}} contract so the
callers in PathLive and RoverLive don't change.
Wiring:
- priv/repo/migrations/20260413000000_create_qrz_callsigns_and_callsign_locations.exs
creates qrz_callsigns and callsign_locations with unique indexes
on :callsign.
- Microwaveprop.Qrz.Client added to the application supervision tree
so the session Agent is started.
- :xmerl added to extra_applications so the release bundles it.
- config/test.exs wires Req.Test plugs for Microwaveprop.Qrz.Client
and Microwaveprop.Geocoder, forces cache_ttl_hours: 0 so the cache
never short-circuits test-level stubs, and supplies dummy QRZ
credentials.
- config/runtime.exs pulls QRZ_USERNAME / QRZ_PASSWORD / QRZ_AGENT
and GOOGLE_API_KEY from the environment so prod and dev can
configure both upstream keys out of band.
Tests (ported verbatim from gridmap-web):
- test/microwaveprop/qrz/callsign_test.exs — schema/changeset
- test/microwaveprop/qrz_test.exs — cache hit, cache miss, TTL
behavior, upsert on stale, error passthrough, case-insensitive
input
- test/microwaveprop/geocoder_test.exs — success, zero results,
request denied, transport error
- test/microwaveprop/callsign_location_test.exs — end-to-end flow
including the QRZ-lat/lon shortcut and the missing-address error
path
All 1294 tests still pass. Credo strict clean.
- Add contacts_inserted_at_desc_id_desc_idx so /contacts list runs as an
Index Scan (~0.4ms) instead of a Seq Scan + top-N heapsort (~77ms on
58k rows)
- Add Microwaveprop.Cache: tiny ETS-backed TTL cache for memoizing
expensive-but-stale-tolerant values
- Cache total_entries for unsearched /contacts page loads (30s TTL,
invalidated on insert)
- Cache the entire /contacts/map payload (pre-encoded JSON + band list),
moving load_contacts into Radio.contact_map_payload; invalidated on
new contact insert. Mount goes from ~150-300ms to ~5ms.
- Fix /map overlay blinking on load: reuse the Leaflet GridLayer across
renderScores calls and just redraw() against the updated ScoreGrid,
instead of removeLayer + new layer which flashed between tile regens
- Make mode optional on submission: schema change (null: true),
submission_changeset no longer requires it, blank strings normalise to
nil, CSV import accepts 6-column (no mode) or 7-column layouts
- core_components .input adds a red asterisk to labels when required,
giving users a visual cue for which fields must be filled on /submit
Registered users can suggest edits to any contact's core fields
(callsigns, grids, band, mode, timestamp). Edits enter an admin
approval queue with field-by-field diff view. On approve, changes
are applied and enrichment re-enqueued if grids/band changed.
Users receive email notification on approve or reject.
Also updates dependabot.yml for mix ecosystem.
- Round grid-derived lat/lon in maybe_fill_latlon changeset step
- Format lat/lon to 6 decimal places on index table
- Migrate existing beacon data to 6 decimal precision
- Add comma separators to EIRP mW display (e.g. 10,000 mW)
- Extract shared add_commas helper for format_freq and format_mw
Height in feet doesn't need decimal precision. Migrates the DB
column, updates schema type, and strips trailing .0 from form
input so the integer cast succeeds.
- Add `mix backtest --all` for consolidated pass/fail table across all features
- Add Backtest.consolidated_report/2 and to_consolidated_markdown/1
- Add Features.all_features/0 to auto-discover backtestable features
- Add `mix import_contest_logs` for bulk ARRL contest CSV import with dedup
- Fix hrrr_climatology to batch by (month, hour) to avoid query timeout

NCEI ASOS 5-minute data client (Weather.NceiMetarClient):
- fetch/3 pulls per-station monthly .dat files from NCEI C00418
- parse/1 decodes the fixed-width METAR format including precise
T-group temperatures (T02110094 → 21.1/9.4°C)
- metar_5min_observations table: schema-identical to
surface_observations, separate table to avoid mixing cadences
Weather.recent_surface_obs/3 prefers 5-min data when available,
falls back to the hourly surface_observations table.

Phase 3 NEXRAD spike: IEM n0q composite available at 5-min cadence
back to 2022+. Compression-ratio proxy shows afternoon images have
13-81% more texture than dawn (directionally correct), but the n0q
product thresholds out the faint clear-air returns needed for BL
stability detection. Parked until MRMS or Level III products can be
investigated. See docs/research/nexrad_spike.md.
Phase 6: hrrr_climatology table aggregating surface_temp_c by
(lat, lon, month, hour) from the 42M+ hrrr_profiles grid-point
rows. mix hrrr_climatology builds it via a single SQL GROUP BY +
upsert. Backtest.Features.temperature_anomaly computes current_temp
minus climatological mean — the meteorologist's "temperature
deviation above normal" predictor for summer afternoon enhancement.
- Spike docs at docs/research/hrrr_native_levels.md confirming files
are on AWS S3 for 5+ years, 50 hybrid levels, and include TKE and
SPFH needed for Phase 2 turbulence features. Architectural finding:
per-point on-demand fetching is impractical (~530 MB/file), so
the ingestion worker batches per (date, hour) instead.
- hrrr_native_profiles schema: arrays per level plus cached surface
scalars and placeholder columns for Phase 2/4 derived fields.
Strictly additive — the existing hrrr_profiles table is untouched.
- HrrrNativeClient: pure URL/message-list helpers, build_native_profile/1
that turns a parsed wgrib2 map into the schema shape (TDD'd).
- Exposed HrrrClient.download_grib_ranges/2 so the native client
reuses the existing parallel byte-range download + disk cache.
- HrrrNativeGridWorker: Oban worker keyed on {year, month, day, hour},
unique at :infinity, pulls distinct (lat, lon) points from contacts
in the ±30 min window, downloads the native grib2, extracts per
point, bulk-upserts.
- mix hrrr_native_backfill --limit N enqueues the top-N hours by
contact count.
Phase 1 gate still pending Task 1.6 (sanity-check backtest after
live data lands).
Add Microwaveprop.Backtest: a feature-evaluation framework that runs
a (lat, lon, valid_time) -> float function over the historical QSO
corpus and a matched random-time baseline, reporting distribution
statistics, distance-binned lift, and band-stratified lift.
Adds four baseline feature wrappers around the current scorer inputs
(naive_gradient, td_depression, time_of_day, pressure), a mix backtest
CLI, and the first set of baseline reports under priv/backtest_reports
so downstream phases have a frozen reference point to compare against.
Wire up the Oban Pro Smart engine in base + runtime config and add the
Pro migration (oban_producers, oban_crons, oban_queues tables + the
v1.6 partition/workflow index additions on oban_jobs).
On the Smart engine the era5_batch queue now has a global_limit of 4
in-flight jobs across the cluster and a rate_limit of 10 jobs per hour
so slow Copernicus CDS submit/poll cycles can't exhaust our daily
request budget when a backfill kicks off.
Contacts now carry a user_id FK to users. When a logged-in user
submits a contact (single or CSV upload), the server injects their
user_id and the email from their account into the submission params,
and the visible email input is replaced with a hidden input holding
that value — logged-in users don't have to retype their address.
The submission changeset now requires at least one of user_id or
submitter_email (rather than hard-requiring email), and email format
is only validated when one is actually present.
Reworded the submit-page blurb from "10 GHz to 241 GHz" to "902 MHz
and up" so it matches the actual band coverage of the project.
Beacons can now record a directional bearing ("omni" or 0-360 degrees)
and a beamwidth in degrees. The keying list grows from {on_off, fsk}
to include FM Voice, WSPR, and the full Q65A/B/C/D/E × 15/30/60/120
family, grouped via optgroups in the submission form.
- Anonymous users can submit beacons (held pending admin approval)
- Added notes field to beacons (textarea on form, shown on detail page)
- Added Beacons link to /map sidebar nav (mobile + desktop),
removed stale Rover Planner link
- Moved /backfill to /admin/backfill under the admin live_session
- Beacon detail map zooms in two extra levels after fitBounds
Non-admin users can now submit beacons but they are held in an
unapproved state until an admin approves them. Only approved beacons
appear in the public list; pending submissions are shown in a separate
admin-only section on /beacons with Approve and Delete actions. The
show page surfaces a pending badge and an admin-only Approve button
when viewing an unapproved beacon.
Also formats EIRP (mW) on the index page without scientific notation.
- Add on_the_air boolean to beacons (default true); surfaced as a
checkbox on the form, a badge on the index, and in the detail list.
- Render a Leaflet map on the beacon show page with a marker at the
beacon's lat/lon tooltipped with callsign + frequency. Marker is
green when on air, gray when off.
- Compute and draw a reception-range estimate as concentric signal-
strength rings. New Microwaveprop.Beacons.RangeEstimate solves a
link budget (FSPL + O2/H2O absorption from BandConfig) at five RX
thresholds (-100 to -145 dBm), then scales by 0.5 + score/100 from
the latest Propagation.point_detail at the beacon's grid square, so
current HRRR conditions shift the rings in or out.
- Re-enable the hourly PropagationGridWorker cron and freshness
monitor in dev.exs so dev actually has HRRR-backed scores to feed
the new estimator.
- Rename beacons.height_m to height_ft; migration converts existing
values (m * 3.28084). Form/list/show labels updated.
- Beacon changeset now fills lat/lon from the grid when they're blank
(previously only the reverse worked). Lat/lon and grid inputs are no
longer marked required in the form — enter one side and the other
populates on blur via phx-change.
- Rename beacons.power_watts to power_mw (migration multiplies existing
values by 1000); form/list/show all relabeled to "Power (mW)"
- Fix Add-monitor button alignment on /users/settings by rendering the
label above and putting the input and button in a plain flex row so
the input wrapper margin no longer offsets the button
- Extend the settings page re-auth window from 10 minutes to 24 hours
Beacons:
- Scaffolded with phx.gen.live then reworked so reads are public
and mutations go through a live_session gated by the new
:require_admin on_mount hook in UserAuth
- Beacon schema stores frequency (MHz), callsign, grid, lat/lon,
power (W), and height above ground (m); grid auto-derives from
lat/lon when left blank via Maidenhead.from_latlon
- Adds Maidenhead.from_latlon/3 so we can compute grids locally
instead of hitting an external API
Users admin page:
- /users and /users/:id/edit (admin-only) for listing, editing
(callsign/name/email/is_admin), and deleting other users
- Adds Accounts.list_users, admin_update_user, delete_user, and
a dedicated admin_changeset on the User schema
- Nav gains a "Users" link for admins and a "Beacons" link for
everyone
