Reworks the post-fetch half of the propagation pipeline. Fetch and GRIB2
decode were already cheap — measured against a live HRRR cycle, all 39
pressure messages decode via `wgrib2 -lola` in 0.29 s and the 31 MB
byte-range fetch takes ~3 s — so nothing here touches the decoder. All the
cost was downstream.
Also fixes a broken NOTIFY that made every chain step run up to 5 times.
pg_notify
`NOTIFY propagation_ready, $1` is a Postgres syntax error: NOTIFY is a
utility statement whose payload must be a literal, so a bind raises
42601. It shared a transaction with the `status='done'` UPDATE, so every
successful step rolled back, stayed 'running', and was requeued by
reclaim_stale_running up to @max_reclaim_attempts times. Elixir's
NotifyListener never fired either, so ScoreCache warm and the
"propagation:updated" fan-out were dead.
FieldGrid
A decoded grid was HashMap<(i32,i32), HashMap<Arc<str>, f32>> — a dense
rectangular grid stored as ~95k nested hash maps, costing ~4.6M inserts
on decode, ~3.7M on merge and ~14M lookups across three derivation
passes. wgrib2 -lola already emits one dense row-major f32 block per
message, so keep it: dense per-message planes, names hashed once per
grid into plane ids, NaN as the missing sentinel. This is what forced
PROP_GRID_RS_PARALLELISM=1 under a 3Gi limit.
Fused pass
Three 95k-cell derivation passes plus 23 band-major scoring passes over
a staged Vec<(f64,f64,Conditions,BandInvariants)> (~19MB re-streamed 23
times) collapse into one pass: levels extracted once per cell, all 23
bands scored while the cell is hot, scores accumulated cell-major so
rayon chunks own disjoint slices. Scores land straight in the dense
score-file body — no ScorePoint scatter.
.pgrid
The profile artifact was an rmpv tree plus gzip -9, written 30x an hour,
and ProfilesFile.read_point/3 gunzipped and unpacked the entire 95k-cell
file to return one cell on every map click and Skew-T load. Replaced
with a dense cell-major f32 record array carrying a self-describing
field table. Elixir reads it via :file.pread; .mp.gz and .etf.gz remain
readable so files written before this drain out of the 48h window.
Measured on a full CONUS grid (95,073 cells x 48 planes x 23 bands):
derive + score + build artifacts 0.022 s
profile write 3.957 s -> 0.006 s (22.0 MB -> 22.4 MB on disk)
single-cell read whole-file decode -> 0.5 us
23 score files 0.003 s
Also
- hrrr_points: batched UNNEST upsert replacing one awaited INSERT per
point. Keeps ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE — the PSKR sampler's two-pass loop
depends on it.
- fetcher: real semaphore capping in-flight ranges at
MAX_PARALLEL_RANGES, which the comment claimed but the code did not do
(it spawned all 27 while the connection pool was sized for 8).
- metrics: per-stage histogram. Only chain-step and decode durations
were instrumented, which is why the write cost stayed invisible.
- profiles_file: parse_valid_time anchors on the known extension set, so
sibling-suffixed names like <iso>.hrdps.prop no longer parse as
<iso>.hrdps and vanish from prune and list operations.
- PROP_GRID_RS_PARALLELISM 1 -> 3. Memory limit held at 3Gi until RSS is
observed at the new parallelism.
- cargo fmt over the crate; worker.rs, hrdps_fetcher.rs and nexrad.rs
were already unformatted at HEAD and the pre-commit hook gates on it.
HRDPS still runs at 0.5 degrees. wgrib2 -lola scales linearly in output
points on rotated lat/lon (12.5 s wall, 202 s CPU for one message at
0.125 degrees) because it has no inverse projection for those grids; a raw
native dump is 0.32 s. The fix is decode-once plus a closed-form
rotated-pole index, left for a follow-up.
HRRR publishes f21-f48 at 3-hourly intervals in addition to the
hourly f01-f18 we already fetch. This extends the grid_tasks seed
from 19 rows (1 analysis + 18 forecast) to 29 rows (1 analysis +
18 hourly + 10 3-hourly), and bumps the UI forecast window
constant from 18h to 48h so the map timeline and path calculator
forecast chart automatically show the extended horizon.
No Rust logic changes needed — the pipeline is data-driven and
u8 forecast_hour already handles f48.
- Replace deprecated xref:exclude with elixirc_options in vendor/oban_pro
- Remove unused require Logger from 8 files
- Pin bitstring size variables with ^ in simple_packing, wgrib2,
complex_packing, section, nexrad_client, mqtt, and radar worker
- Remove dead defp clauses (format/1 nil, depression/2 nil)
- Rename Buildings.Parser type record/0 -> building_record/0 to avoid
overriding built-in type
- Remove redundant catch-all in candidate_detail.ex
- Simplify contact_live/show.ex conditional based on type narrowing
- Fix DateTime.from_iso8601 return pattern in vendor/oban_web
- Upgrade phoenix_live_view to 1.1.31
- Drop --warnings-as-errors from precommit alias; known false positives
from @after_verify-generated code in Elixir 1.20.0-rc.6 + PLV 1.1.x
- Add credo --strict to precommit as replacement static-analysis gate
- Radio.normalize_proposed/1 now Map.take/2 the allowed-edit keys
before normalization. Owner / admin / pending-edit submit paths all
funnel through this boundary, so a crafted form can no longer
mass-assign user_id, flagged_invalid, inserted_at, etc. on a
contact via String.to_existing_atom -> Ecto.Changeset.change.
- Accounts.revoke_api_token/2 rescues Ecto.Query.CastError and
returns {:error, :not_found} so a malformed UUID in
DELETE /api/v1/me/api-tokens/:id renders the API's clean 404
problem+json instead of a 500.
- ProfilesFile.read_etf decodes with :erlang.binary_to_term(bin, [:safe]).
Defense-in-depth against tampered on-disk profiles (atom-table
exhaustion via untrusted ETF).
- Regression tests: contact_edit_test.exs covers the rejected
mass-assignment fields; accounts_api_token_test.exs covers the
malformed-UUID path.
Found by auditing the ProfilesFile, hrrr_profiles, and weather-layer
contracts against what the Rust writers actually emit.
Bug 1 (HIGH) — Rust `hrrr_points` worker upserted hrrr_profiles rows
with NULL `surface_refractivity`, `min_refractivity_gradient`, and
`ducting_detected`. The Elixir HrrrClient path always wrote them
via SoundingParams.derive. Per-QSO pages that rely on these
scalars ("N:", "dN/dh:", duct badge) showed "—" for any contact
enriched through Stream C. Fixed by porting
`surface_refractivity` + `ducting_detected` into Rust's
`sounding_params.rs` and deriving at upsert time.
Bug 2 (HIGH) — Rust f01..f18 `cell_to_profile_entry` never emitted
wind_u / wind_v / cloud_cover_pct / precip_mm into ProfilesFile
cells. `Propagation.factors_for` recomputes factor scores from the
profile cell on /map click, and these four fields are read
(wind_speed_kts, sky_cover_pct, precip_to_rate_mmhr). Result: every
f01..f18 point-detail popup showed 0 for wind/sky/rain factors.
Fixed by extracting the grib values at cell_to_profile_entry time
and whitelisting the keys for atomization in
profiles_file.ex `@mp_atom_keys`.
Bug 4 (MEDIUM) — `WeatherLayers.duct_field/2` only knew the
`SoundingParams.detect_ducts` shape (`d["base"]` / `d["strength"]`).
The Rust/HrrrNativeClient shape uses `:base_m` / `:thickness_m`
atom keys (post-ProfilesFile.read atomization). On /weather, the
Duct Base / Duct Strength layers returned nil for every Rust-origin
cell. Tolerant lookup now reads either shape; uses `thickness_m`
as the "strength" proxy for the native shape (thicker duct traps
a wider band).
Skipped (verified but lower impact):
- Rust ProfilesFile aggregates ducts as scalars, not per-layer — the
`ducts` array in the popup is always empty. Requires larger
DuctMetrics refactor in Rust; deferred.
- `complete_hrrr_task` emits no NOTIFY (vs `complete` which does).
Elixir has no matching listener yet, so adding NOTIFY alone is a
no-op; the existing cron reconciler catches it.
- `:best_duct_band_ghz` fallback in propagation.ex is dead code;
cleanup, not a bug.
133 Rust tests + 2842 Elixir tests + credo green.
Clicks on the map were hanging for 1-3s, triggering the Phoenix topbar
progress bar visible to the user. Three hot-path improvements:
1. ScoresFile.read_point now uses a two-range :file.pread/2 — reads the
33-byte header + one cell byte (~60 bytes) instead of the full ~93 KB
file. point_forecast walks 19 forecast hours per click, so the old
full-read path was the dominant cost on cold cache.
2. ProfilesFile.read/1 and list_valid_times/0 cached via
Microwaveprop.Cache (5s TTL). Decoded profile maps are ~10 MB each
(92k cells); timeline scrub that re-clicks the same valid_time
within seconds now hits ETS instead of re-gunzipping + decoding.
Cache keys include base_dir so test setup that swaps dirs doesn't
see stale entries. Writes + prune + retain_window invalidate.
3. Endpoint log_level now filters /metrics the same way it already
filters /health — Prometheus scrapes every 5s and was producing
visible log spam.
Pod-local ETS is right for this workload (per-click read, tiny working
set); Valkey / shared memstore would not help here since each pod needs
its own fast-path lookup. File a follow-up if cross-pod score lookups
ever show up in flame graphs.
Phase 3 Stream A: Rust's prop-grid-rs writes f00 profile files as
MessagePack (c4f309c). Elixir needs to read both formats during the
cutover window and indefinitely afterward — .mp.gz wins when both
exist.
Reader:
- path_for/1 stays on .etf.gz (Elixir legacy writer)
- mp_path_for/1 returns the .mp.gz sibling Rust lands
- read/1 prefers .mp.gz, falls back to .etf.gz, :enoent if neither
- decode_mp_body handles the top-level {v, valid_time, cells} shape
- normalize_profile atomizes a whitelist of known keys (surface_*,
native_min_gradient, ducts[], profile[] levels, ...) and leaves
everything else as strings so no String.to_atom bomb is possible
- Directory scan picks up both extensions so retain_window and
prune_older_than also work uniformly; list_valid_times dedupes
by timestamp
Adds msgpax ~> 2.4 dependency. 4 new tests cover format preference,
key atomization, :enoent path, and dedupe.
The persisted grid_data files contain atoms (:base_m, :top_m,
:thickness_m, :min_freq_ghz, :native_min_gradient, :ducts, etc.) that
live in modules which aren't eagerly loaded during application start.
warm_grid_cache_from_latest_profile runs in Application.start/2 before
those modules get pulled in by their first call sites, so [:safe] was
rejecting our own legitimate files at boot — every weather page hit
crashed with "invalid or unsafe external representation of a term".
The whole point of [:safe] is to refuse atoms from untrusted external
ETF input. ProfilesFile.write!/2 in this same module is the only writer
of these files, so the input is trusted by definition — drop the flag.
The test additions round-trip the production data shape including duct
fields as a regression guard.
Two related UI changes driven by the same data:
* Move the selected-layer description out of the sidebar and into a
dedicated top-right overlay on the map. The sidebar kept the same
layer buttons but dropped the descriptive text; the new overlay
shows group + layer name + description in one card. Mobile still
shows the description in the collapsible panel since it has no
top-right free real estate.
* Add a forecast-hour timeline bar at the bottom of the map, matching
the propagation map. WeatherMapLive enumerates ProfilesFile on mount
(the grid worker has been persisting f00..f18 on disk since
commit 07ffcf5), pushes data-valid-times for the JS hook to render
as buttons, and handles a new select_time event by reading the
per-hour ProfilesFile on demand via Weather.weather_grid_at/2.
weather_grid_at/2 deliberately skips the GridCache write path for
non-latest hours — caching 18 × 92k rows would add ~300 MB per pod.
A ~2 MB ETF decode per scrub is fast enough for a click.
Subscribes to propagation:pipeline so the timeline picks up new
forecast hours live as they land, without waiting for the full chain
to finish.
Extend the f00 profile persistence to cover every forecast hour
(f00-f18) so /weather keeps working across pod restarts and shows
forecast-hour atmospheric data without a fresh database. Route the
Weather cold path (latest_grid_valid_time, load_weather_grid,
weather_point_detail) through ProfilesFile first, with the legacy
hrrr_profiles table as a last-resort historical fallback. Warm
GridCache from the latest profile on app start so /weather is hot
the moment a pod boots.
The propagation_scores → binary files cutover dropped the factors
JSONB column, which left point_detail returning factors: %{} and
broke the analysis breakdown popup on map clicks. Persist the
enriched f00 grid_data to /data/scores/profiles/{iso}.etf.gz and
rescore on demand at click time so the factor block renders again.
