Turned on :error_handling, :underspecs, and :unmatched_returns in
mix.exs dialyzer config. The 97 warnings this surfaced were fixed in
place rather than suppressed:
- unmatched_return (79): explicit discard with `_ = ...` for
fire-and-forget side effects (Process.cancel_timer, :ets.new,
send/2), and pattern-matched `:ok = ...` for control-plane
Phoenix.PubSub subscribe/unsubscribe/broadcast calls so a future
return-shape change fails loud.
- contract_supertype (18): tightened @spec arg and return types on
data_builder, historical_loader, url_params, packet_utils,
encoding_utils, aprs_symbol, weather_controller, packet_replay to
match each function's actual success typing.
No behavioural change. mix compile clean, 1008 tests pass, dialyzer
count is now 0.
Dep upgrades (mix deps.update --all):
- phoenix_live_view 1.1.27 → 1.1.28
- swoosh 1.23.1 → 1.25.0
- bandit 1.10.3 → 1.10.4
- credo 1.7.17 → 1.7.18
- hammer 7.2.0 → 7.3.0
- igniter 0.7.6 → 0.7.9
- and minor: fine, lazy_html, meck, mimerl
- removed stale lock entries: geocalc, gettext_pseudolocalize, gridsquare
Bug fixes surfaced during update:
- ETS cache tables were :protected (owned by Application master), preventing
the Cache GenServer from writing; change to :public + write_concurrency
so device/symbol/query caches actually work
- historical_dot_html returned Phoenix.HTML.safe tuple instead of plain string;
symbol_html is JSON-encoded for JS so it must be binary
- String.slice always returns binary so the || "Unknown error" fallback was
unreachable dead code (dialyzer guard_fail)
- Supervisor.which_children always returns a list so the _ -> branch in
database_metrics was unreachable dead code (dialyzer pattern_match_cov)
- Add @type t :: %__MODULE__{} to User schema to resolve unknown_type in user_auth spec
- Extract nested if in leader_election to fix Credo nesting depth violation
- Update .dialyzer_ignore.exs: remove 2 stale entries, add false positives for
Ecto.Multi/Gettext opaque types and Mix.Task PLT limitations
Implements error email notifications that:
- Send email only for first occurrence of each unique error
- Only send in production environment (dev/test are silent)
- Include error details, location, and link to ErrorTracker UI
- Use existing Resend/Swoosh configuration for delivery
- Email sent to graham@mcintire.me
Integrates with ErrorTracker via telemetry events.
Convert the packets table to a time-partitioned table with daily
partitions (PARTITION BY RANGE on received_at). This replaces the
expensive CTE-based batch DELETE cleanup with instant DROP TABLE
partition drops — no dead tuples, no WAL pressure, no VACUUM needed.
- Add PartitionManager GenServer to create/drop daily partitions
- Simplify PacketCleanupWorker to delegate to PartitionManager
- Replace gridsquare/geocalc deps with local Maidenhead module
- Remove gettext_pseudolocalize dependency
- Fix Decimal comparison in packet consumer test
- Batch real-time packet push_events: collect marker data across the
packet batch and send a single "new_packets" WebSocket message instead
of one per packet. JS handler processes all live→historical conversions
before adding new markers to avoid intra-batch conflicts.
- Batch RF path station queries: replace N+1 get_latest_packet_for_callsign
calls with a single DISTINCT ON query selecting only callsign + lat/lng.
- Add read_concurrency: true to streaming_packets_subscribers and :aprsme
ETS tables (read-heavy, rarely written).
- Remove dead GC code in PacketConsumer (threshold > 1000 unreachable with
max batch_size of 100).
Delete 5 unused modules: Presence (untracked), LiveView ShutdownHandler
(unused mixin), RateLimiterWrapper (pointless delegation), Passcode
(only used by own test), MapLive.Utils (pure delegates).
Fix ShutdownHandler to not call deleted Presence. Inline ParamUtils
at call sites. Remove cachex dep and 27 stale entries from mix.lock.
Clean commented-out Exq/Redis config from application.ex.
System A (PacketManager + PacketStore ETS) had a fatal ID mismatch:
extract_packet_ids returned Ecto UUIDs but PacketStore stored under
MD5 hashes — cleanup could never find stored packets. Unified all
packet tracking on visible_packets map in LiveView assigns.
Deletes packet_manager.ex and packet_store.ex, removes from
supervision tree and PacketDistributor.
- Initialize :aprsme ETS table in application.ex with message_number
counter; was missing, causing crash in Is.send_message/1
- Trigger reconnect on gen_tcp.send failure instead of leaking the
dead socket with active timers
- Remove cluster-only env vars from deployment (POD_IP, POD_NAME,
POD_NAMESPACE, RELEASE_DISTRIBUTION, RELEASE_NODE) since
CLUSTER_ENABLED=false
- Remove redundant APRS_PASSCODE secret ref now that APRS_PASSWORD
is set as plaintext
- Replace Cachex with native ETS (Erlang Term Storage) in Cache module
- Remove Redis-based caching logic from application.ex
- Always initialize ETS tables for device_cache, query_cache, symbol_cache
- Update StatusLive to use Aprsme.Cache instead of Cachex directly
- Fix crash on startup when REDIS_URL was set but Redis not used
This fixes the no_cache error that was causing pods to crash.
- Remove phoenix_pubsub_redis dependency from mix.exs
- Update PubSub configuration to use Phoenix's native distributed capabilities
- Simplify clustering logic - no longer requires Redis URL for PubSub
- Phoenix PubSub automatically distributes messages across connected Erlang nodes
- Benefits: lower latency, automatic failure handling, simpler deployment
- Redis still available for caching and job processing when needed
- Maintains backward compatibility for both clustered and non-clustered modes

- Optimized list concatenation in PacketConsumer from O(n) to O(1) by prepending events
- Refactored coordinate rounding to avoid recreating anonymous functions on each call
- Added database indexes for case-insensitive searches on upper(sender) and upper(base_callsign)
- Implemented RegexCache to avoid recompiling regex patterns for wildcard device matching
- Added compound index on upper(sender) with received_at for efficient sorted queries
These changes improve performance in hot paths:
- Packet batching is now more efficient with better list operations
- Coordinate processing avoids function allocation overhead
- Database queries using UPPER() now use functional indexes
- Device wildcard matching no longer recompiles regex on every lookup

Implements automatic connection draining to balance load across cluster nodes:
- ConnectionMonitor tracks CPU usage and connection counts across nodes
- Triggers draining when node is overloaded (>70% CPU or 2x avg connections)
- LiveViews gracefully disconnect and reconnect to less loaded nodes
- Helps prevent single pod from handling all WebSocket connections
Also fixes Mic-E packet parsing to properly extract altitude data and
remove telemetry suffixes from comments.

When a new deployment occurs in k8s, all connected LiveViews now receive
a notification to update their deployment timestamp display.
Changes:
- Added DeploymentNotifier GenServer that broadcasts deployment events
- LiveViews subscribe to "deployment_events" PubSub topic
- When DEPLOYED_AT env var is set (k8s deployments), a notification is
sent after app startup
- LiveViews handle the deployment event and update their timestamp
This ensures that when a new version is deployed, users see the
deployment timestamp update in real-time without needing to refresh
their browser.

Previously, the deployment timestamp was set to DateTime.utc_now() when
the application started, which meant it would always show as recent in
k8s environments where pods are recreated on each deployment.
This commit:
- Updates Release.init() to check for DEPLOYED_AT environment variable
- Falls back to current time if env var is not set (backwards compatible)
- Adds proper ISO8601 timestamp parsing with error handling
- Updates GitHub Actions deploy workflow to set DEPLOYED_AT during deployment
- Creates k8s patch file for future manual deployments
The deployment timestamp will now persist across pod restarts in k8s,
showing the actual deployment time rather than pod startup time.

- Remove manual Exq startup from application supervision tree
- Add :exq to extra_applications in mix.exs for automatic startup
- Remove duplicate Exq configuration functions
- Let Exq start automatically via runtime.exs configuration
The issue was Exq being started twice - once manually in the supervision
tree and once automatically via configuration, causing "already_started" error.

- Add MigrationLock module using PostgreSQL advisory locks
- Prevent concurrent migrations across multiple nodes
- Update Release.migrate to use distributed lock when cluster enabled
- Disable auto-migrations in cluster mode to avoid race conditions
- Add init container configuration for Kubernetes deployments
- Document migration strategies in k8s/README-migrations.md

This commit introduces a dual-mode caching and rate limiting system that can use
either Redis (for distributed deployments) or ETS/Cachex (for single-node setups).
Key changes:
- Add Cache abstraction layer that automatically switches between Redis and Cachex
- Implement RedisCache module with full distributed cache functionality
- Implement RedisRateLimiter with sliding window algorithm for accurate rate limiting
- Add RateLimiterWrapper to provide unified API for both implementations
- Update application startup to conditionally use Redis when REDIS_URL is set
- Migrate all cache operations to use the new Cache abstraction
- Support graceful fallback to ETS-based solutions when Redis is unavailable
The system automatically detects Redis availability via REDIS_URL environment
variable and switches between implementations without code changes. This enables
proper distributed caching and rate limiting in Kubernetes deployments while
maintaining backward compatibility for development environments.

Prevent both AprsIsConnection and cluster-managed Is connection from
starting simultaneously. When clustering is enabled, only the cluster's
ConnectionManager should handle APRS-IS connections via leader election.
This resolves aprsc server disconnections caused by duplicate validated
clients with the same username (W5ISP-1).

Implement leader election to ensure only one APRS-IS connection across
multiple Kubernetes replicas. This prevents duplicate packet processing
and respects APRS-IS usage policies.
Key changes:
- Add leader election using :global registry
- Create connection manager for dynamic APRS-IS management
- Implement packet distribution from leader to all nodes
- Add Kubernetes headless service for node discovery
- Configure DNS-based clustering with libcluster
- Update deployment to support 3 replicas with clustering

PacketConsumerPool which automatically handles subscriptions for
multiple consumer processes, making PacketPipelineSetup redundant
and causing startup failures.

This commit introduces several major performance improvements and adds
robust error handling for malformed HTTP requests:
Performance Optimizations:
- Add database migration with BRIN indexes for time-series data and partial
indexes for recent queries, significantly improving query performance
- Create global StreamingPacketsPubSub system for real-time packet distribution
with geographic bounds filtering using ETS for fast lookups
- Refactor PacketConsumer to use Stream module for memory-efficient processing,
preventing memory accumulation during batch operations
- Implement dedicated BroadcastTaskSupervisor pool for async broadcast operations,
preventing GenServer blocking on I/O
- Increase database connection pool from 25 to 45 (production) and 15 to 30 (dev)
for better concurrency support
Error Handling:
- Add SentryFilter to prevent Bandit.HTTPError from missing Host headers from
cluttering Sentry (common with bots/scanners)
- Configure custom 400 Bad Request error handling
- Filter out common bot/scanner paths from error reporting
All changes include comprehensive test coverage following TDD practices.

- Restored original PacketConsumer implementation from before optimizations
- Reverted to fixed batch size of 50 packets (original value)
- Removed SystemMonitor and InsertOptimizer from application startup
- Restored original config with buffer size 1000 and batch timeout 1000ms
- Removed all dynamic batch sizing and optimization logic
The recent performance optimizations were causing packet buffer overflows
because the dynamic batch sizing was actually slowing down processing.
Reverting to the simpler, working implementation that processes packets
consistently without buffer overflows.
